I'm not an electrician but would like to be. When I was in the job centre today I saw a number of 17th edition electrician posts available. I typed in become 17th edition spark and I'm looking at a ÂŁ400 course over 3 days? Any good? Can I get a job with this?

Dead right mate, Neil Armstrong didn't have customers to deal with who thought they knew better than him. Or pikeys trying to pinch his materials. Or cowboys telling NASA they would go to the moon for less money and no certification.
Astronauts? flippin jessies the lot of them:)

im not sure...part p astronaut ..

The thing is Glenn the companys pushing these courses put it over in such a way that the gullible are sucked in. Couple that with the general view that all construction work is easy and you will get people thinking they can qualify in a few weeks.
I've even tried to speak to one of them to ask how they can justify their claims but the call handler promised to get someone to ring me back and I'm still waiting (after about 6 months)
I think this whole "industry" is crying out for some investigative journalism, I might even write the article myself as a sideline hehe
Taking the bull by the horns Trev?.......

But most of them think they know it all after a few days & then go round telling people they're fully qualified Electricians, had a Foreman in a firm I was subbing to on a School re-wire. He'd actually done a 6 month course & still did'nt have a clue, could'nt wire a Dis board to save his life, never even seen Pyro or worked Armoured but we were supposed to take orders from him.
but i bet theres a lot of that about.....all you can do is just do what they say....then stand back and watch a load of it get pulled..lol....

Well it's not just us mate. There's a place near us that advertises plastering, bricklaying, tiling, joinery and plumbing short courses all of which are watering down the whole construction industry. Plus, suppose some numpty does a 6 week brickie course, who the hell is going to take him on? whatever qualification they're giving out is completely worthless and the numpty has been stiffed for his course fees. It's legalised robbery in this sparky's opinion and more importantly, like I said earlier, it brings the whole construction industry into disrepute. No bloody wonder Joe Soap thinks what we do is easy.

Rant over
