Dear all,

A house has convert one bedroom to a studio flat. The landlord asks me to install an electrical meter in the flat, so the tenant can pay the bill by himself. Technically it is no problem. But how to register the meter? The landlord hopes it can be read by other people like british gas , eon or other provider directly.

Anyone had similar experience?

Thanks a lot!

you can only install a landlord's meter, either a pre=pay, or the landlord reads it and charges the tenant. for a separate supplier's meter, you need to get supplier/DNO to do it.

Not only that, as from next year, all meters have to be certificated (think MID) if used to charge a 3rd party. Also, the Landlord can not make a profit from what electricity has been used.

I think you need to think about that sentence as the dno's and suppliers may have other ideas!

The Landlord is either an idiot or just plain naive!! Any meter that's going to be read by the Lecky company needs to have an MPAN number, which he will need to arrange with the appropriate billing company..... Other than that, it down to a private auxiliary meter that he will need to manually and accurately calculate in order to charge the tenant for his electrical consumption...Or a Pre Pay meter...

Thats one of my pet hates, naive landlords. The god damn fool!

The easy solution is to have MID certified prepay meter as a sub meter feeding the flat. The tenant pays the landlord for all electricity used NB the law is that the landlord can only supply the electricity at cost.
