I am installing a new CU in a friends house (whom is a builder himself). He is going to buy the testers to test for Zs etc,

My main question is: I have the following qualifications C&G 2330 level 2, EAL level 3 and 17th edition. Do I have to have the 2391 in order to self certificate? I know this would be the easiest way to sign off but I have a friend (equally qualified) who says that he has installed new CUs before and that it is possible to do so with photographic evidence of "before and after" which I can present to a council representative (of the borough he the customer lives in) that can agree to sign it off if they are happy with it too in meeting requirements.

Is there such a loop hole as this?

Any help in this matter would be much appreciated!

Hi,

You don't have to have 2391, but you either have (supposed) to notify LABC (Building control) before you start, and ask if they will accept your EIC, or if not pay them £--- (it varies depending on location), or be a member of one of the part pee schemes, (I don't like paying for this either).

The work is notifiable under part p, and can cause problems later with insurance, sale of the property etc...etc.

Nice builder, if he is going shell out hundreds of pounds to buy a tester, just to enable you to carry out all of the required tests and then shell out more money going through building control to notify the job.

Yes, a very generous builder, buying maybe 3 testers or an MFT just for a CU change.....most builders would be thinking along the lines of a fabricated cert and keeping hold of their wad, lucky yours isnt like that.

realsitically as has been mentioned you need to be regestered to self certify ,and also as has been mentioned insurance , i know of a job where the consumer unit caught fire setting fire to the house they guy did it him self and because he wasnt regestered his insurance refused to pay out , having said that he didnt issue a certificate either

Make sure the new tester has calibration paperwork with it

He is buying the (or says he is ) with the intention of finding me work, and then taking a cut from it... which is agreeable to me, I wont turn work down and I am not in the position to buy these myself as I am just starting up. ?He probably has a view of using them himself too as he has seen that after many years, the best trade of the lot is being a sparky! :)

Hum. Me thinks that you need to do the sums because if you're planning on doing this as a job you'll need PL insurance, membership of a scheme, tester, calibration etc.

Using a tester and being competent to use one and diagnose faults and sign off installations is not something you can turn your hand to overnight.
