I found an old roll of T&E 16mm at the back of my lock up.
Can l still use this if sleeve the Black and Red accordingly?

I figure it stands to reason that if cable buried in dry conduit will eventually deteriorate, then eventually so to will the same cable sat wound on a drum. But for modern-ish manufactured cable it's surely got to be measurable in decades.

If were talking in decades, how can you relate that term into a shelf life for PVC insulated and sheathed cable (T&E) ??

I've absolutely no idea! I'm just saying that as there must be a limiting factor eventually, it does therefore have a shelf life. Who's to say that the cable won't outlive the shelf?

Just to clarify - we're talking about the insulation, not the fundamental element of Copper which as we know was already quite happy buried in the ground for billions of years before being tortured and willed into strands.

Yes we are talking about the PVC insulation and sheath. What i'm saying is, if were talking in ''Decades'' we are then talking about a cables life span, rather than as a products shelf life...

My original post was in jest, as i said pvc has a shelf life which all depends on the conditions its stored in, put a grey T&E on an outside wall facing the sun and you will see an accelerated effect that will befall any pvc cable that dosn't have UV protection, changing temps, and damp atmospheres will also speed up the deteriation of the pvc.... as goes life expectancy in storage it is probably decades + but only if stored correctly if not though that can become years, yrs of using pvc its handling should be obvious to you if its losing its properties by its flexibility, hardness and visual clues too.

Agreed, if installed or stored within it's design boundaries the life span and shelf life will be exactly the same!! Generally products that are given a shelf live, differentiate from the products usage life... if you know what i mean ...lol!!!
