i am very new to this, and i have been asked to explain a few times, how the power generated fro the pv panels is used for power around the house,

i.e how does it know to use the power from the pv panel and stop using power from the electricity supplier,

sorry mate. i know less about solar than i do about gynocology, or brain surgery. think it's to do with more kw being generated by the solar panels than is being used by the installation.

It's a gravity fed system. The panels are usually on the roof, whereas the mains generally comes up out of the floor. Therefore, gravity favours the electricity generated higher up, which flows down the cables and is used up first. Unless you have a TT supply fed from overhead lines. In this case it's a bit more complex and often involves a pump assisted inverter. Or sumfink.

But surely with the inverter being mains fed and no cistern above the panels it can't possibly be graviity fed, it must be an unvented system? What are you smoking Julian?

Sorry, I've checked with my wife (a plumber) and you are quite correct. In my defence, I did do the NICEIC PV course so generally know very little about PV.
