Doing a PIR this morning, TNS, 16mm clamped to supply cable which leads to the MET, <100v between L&E so couldnt get Ze, there is a 6mm Earth running from the MET to the 3036 board, despite the non existent Ze if i test between the MET and line I get 240v and 0.23ohms!, there is no bonding at all, loop between L & N is 0.10ohms

Ive already phoned this one in

It may be that the Earth is not connected or there may be a voltage present.

First establish you have 230 V on the line, then check the earth Warning the earth may be at 230 V!!. Stick a long screw driver in the ground and use this as your reference. There may be a voltage on the earth when disconnected possibly. The meter will see the potential difference.

If there is no voltage present, as you know the met is effectively connected to the supply, then megger between the earth conductor and the met. This will confirm the earth is non existent.

When your testing at the met the cpc's are connected to appliance's etc, eg a gas boiler which its self is connected to the water and gas, which if the services are shared with next door would also be connected to the supply, hence why your getting a reading when connected.

SP engineer just been out, I met him there, in his own words "yep were not providing F**k all there mate", 2v between L & E.
He also said good spot as it was 230v and 0.34 between MET and line, although I've always tested straight from the clamp or main earth, house cut off now and road up tomorrow, so just about to tell
the customers!

SP were there at 8.15am this morning, break was in the section of cable in the cavity so they dug a home where the original cable came in and cut off at the bad section and ran new cable up the outside wall in a cable guard and into the cut out, sorted

Thanks for coming back and letting us know the outcome. So often people come and ask for help/advice but then just disappear into the ether and we're left hanging.

This proves the point for doing the Ze test properly... making sure you are ONLY testing external to the installation.
It's nice to get some acknowledgement from the DNO guys too :)

PIR I did the other week... Pre work visit saw there was no obvious bonding, Zs on a couple of sockets I tested "to get a feel for the job" right on the limit at 1.15

On inspection, found many CPCs not terminated in CU!
Managing to get an earth at the sockets via immersion, CH pipework and gas supply!

Looks like someone changed a 3036 board in the 80s (and made a balls of it)

Simon

Totally agree, I've known of people just do plug in
Zs on the rings to check if the property is earthed
Oh and I got the remidial work and a board change out of the job! Plus a test of the next door neighbours as rumours got round about the lost earth, 20 houses on the terrace so u never know
