OK guy need some help, as i am a little confused may have a rewire job for a small bungalow with a caravan in the back garden which would require a supply as someone will be living in it (legal gypsy lol)

what is the best way to go about this.

I was going to supply the van from a spare way in cu in the bungalow, i think it's tn-s supply need to check.

do i have to provide an earth rod for the caravan or just main bonding.

also the kitchen is very small in the bungalow is it necessary to run a ring cct, no cooker cct just about 4 double socket no extractor fan etc.

best wishes and thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi and thanks for the replies again.
i was going to run a 3 core armoured from the cu in the bungalow to the consumer unit in the caravan,
then bond the metalwork to the earth bar in the cu in the caravan is this not correct as theoretically it would be connected to the cu in the bungalow via the armoured cable, or should i just run a 10mm from metalwork of the caravan to the cu in the bungalow.

thanks and best wishes great forum by the way.

Yes, that is perfectly correct, as long as the SWA is 10mm or more. It will be the 3rd core of your SWA that will ensuring the bonding, not the SWA armour, that will be your CPC for this sub-main cable!! As Malcolm stated, the caravan CU earth bar would then become a EMT. Making sure bonding requirements within the caravan are in place, especially to the framework. I've forgotten if you said that the Caravan had RCD protection in it's CU or not, if it has, run this sub-main from an unprotected MCB in the new bungalow CU. That will stop any discrimination problems of both RCDs tripping at the same time.

By the way, what distance are we talking about for this sub-main cable for the caravan ??

Thank e54 i think i am getting the jist of it now.

Is 10mm swa cost effective its just that i have 10mm earth cable i could run with the swa.

the distance is about 10 meters from cu to sub main.

the caravan will have 30ma rcd and will use a unprotected slot in house cu.

once again many thanks

Yes that's fine too, run the single 10mm earth with your SWA. What size sub-main were you thinking of using for the caravan?? Keep in mind, that at some later date this cable is going to supply a log cabin type structure on a more permanent basis. Knowing UK, they will be wanting an electric shower installed at some point. ...lol!!! Try and get as much info out of the customer as possible, as to how this new structure is going to be used...

thanks e54, will talk to the client first to decide what they require.

was thinking 40a mcb in bungalow 10mm swa for submain cable, at the moment the client only needs light and power in the van, but will obviously discuss this with them as like you said electric shower here we come lol.

best wishes skydog

Just an update and reminder to other electrician's i could not do this job as there was lots of asbestos in the loft, there was an asbestos panel dividing the loft that had been smashed through and there were bits of it everywhere and the was no way i was belly snaking through that.

anyway just a reminder guys be vigilant when it comes to asbestos.

best wishes
