still learning.

hi, I have just put right the wiring to a ceiling fan/light for my mate and it works exept when the fan is turned on it makes a noise until the light is turned on and then it is quiet, could this be cos of the wiring or just because it was a cheap fan.
it had a connector block in it labled L,N,Light, i put the switch live to L, neutral to N, and a wire from the L to the Light is this correct?

thankls

Hi

using 3 core cable running from originall light fitting /junction box to extractor fan/light

at light fitting connect the brown to perment live then connect to Live in extractor fan
at light fitting connect the black ( marked with brown tape or brown sleeve ) to switched line then at extractor fan connect to light
at light fitting connect the grey ( marked with blue tape or) sleeving then connect to neutral in extractor fan

Think about what cables you need, for starters your going to need your switched live for the light and obviously a neutral, now what about the fan itself, that is if you want it running properly without the light on.

i think the neutral for the light is combined withe the fan live as the conector block has a live for the fan, a live for the light and a neutral. the switch live went to the fan live i then looped the fan live to the light live so they were both on the switch live and neutral went to neutral.

the fan comes on when the switch is on and the light has it's own pull cord switch on the unit just thinking but do you think the fan should be on the switched live and the light on a perminent live as it has it's own switch on the unit?

there are no instructions he lost them. if i change thde dimmer for a switch i can wire the light to the permanent live as the light has a pull cord switch on the fan unit and wire the fan to the switched live. is that correct.

my original question was when the fan is turned on it is noisy but when the light is turned on any ideas?

You could do that but why not keep the dimmer for the light on the fan, therefore say in the evening you don't have to walk over to the fan to turn the light on, and you don't have to change the dimmer, then make the pull cord the fan thats how I've installed them before anyway.

Don't know about the noise but it didn't sound like you had it wired right to begin with.
