I’m currently working on a school refurbishment as a sub-contractor to a large electrical company carrying out the work (labour only). After numerous delays, lack of materials & information, I joked to the site Forman that I could do a better job myself. He replied that along as I had CHAS membership I could even tender for jobs myself! They weren’t even looking for NICEIC Approved Contractor status, only CHAS to satisfy their H&S requirements.

So my question is, how easy is it to gain CHAS membership as a sole trader (I’ve already applied for my D&B D-U-N-S Number)?

I went SAFEcontractor which is now affiliated with CHAS as one of my customers required it.
I found it straight forward as I understood the requirements.
It will increase your overheads though.
You are also not guaranteed any work from it.

We had it for the council work we were doing , it was relatively easy to acquire .
We let it slip and subsequently are not asked to tender for them at the moment , must sort it out again so thanks for the reminder !

The ÂŁ500 fee can actually be good value, depending on how you value your time!Obviously if you're quiet and enjoy producing reams of paperwork and procedure then fill your boots! If you're an NICEIC or ECA approved contractor, that can help with the application/assessment process.
