I am just starting out, and I am looking for a decent multi-meter. I have come across a couple And not sure what to buy
This one is the new 1700 series. It classes this one as the 17 Edition entry level, what?:

[URL="http://www.alpha-electronics.com/FrontShop/Items/9825/megger-mft1710-multifunction-tester.html"]It seems OK at the price of ÂŁ460

Or

The 1500 series at about the same price. Is this one up to the 17th standard, or am I missing the point.

I have been hunting all day for a meter that will be reliable and cheap, and I think I've narrowed it down to these two.
I would like a second opinion before parting with my cash.
Any advice is better than non

Thanks Lads

why dont you go to the ELEX 2011 show at the ricoh arena in coventry on 15 & 16th this week and you will be able to get ur hand on some testers and even get a demo from the manufacturers before u part with any cash??

just a thought.

i have a 1553 which i think is a top bit of kit, however im sure that some of the other ones are just as good? if you get a chance to get some hands on a tester beforehand, then u may find that some are more user friendly than others! its a personal preferance thing really, thats why i suggested that u try a few.............and also that not always cheap is the way forward. as paying that bit extra will be better in the long run............because we all know from past experiences that 12 months down the line u will be saying to urself 'wish i would have paid a bit extra and got the next model up etc if u know what i mean. This is the one bit of kit that u really need to get spot on as it is ur bread and butter!

Please take as constructive advice!!!
