So we're running into the evening yesterday trying to get a job finished. It's 7pm and there's about 30-40mins left, then pack up. My apprentice starts whinging that he's not being paid till 8pm and that he wants to go. I say to him to just muck in with the rest of us and we'll be done soon. He carries on whining about me being unfair, so I say to him "look fella, it's not like I dock your wages when we finish early is it?! You don't seem to complain about being paid for going home early, so suck it up!". He then throws a little bit of a man wobbly saying that he isn't working because he wants to be and that he's doing me a favour by working for me, then leaves the site. I run out after him as he's getting into the van and whip the keys out the barrel.

First time I've ever had to fire someone on the spot!

The bare face cheek of it! Go out of your way to help someone and get that in return.

Balls to him, the lazy little f***er had no initative anyway.

Normal day is 8 till 6. 45 mins for lunch, plenty of tea and smoke breaks. We finish early sometimes too.
Sounds good Damian .
may I add I would also want chips wi my breakfast and prosseco for lunch in a darn sarf style.
although megger lovers bag of sand a week sounds tempting.

To be frank these wee pricks don't know they are living.
ive seen loads of laddies with ability throw it all away due to having a head full of spanners....
only to regret it all a few years later .
its a different generation though and old school boss tactics just do not work on them.
having a teenager in the house I think school fills their heads full of nonsense that they can do anything and the reality of working is a right old shock to them.

You wanna earn what I pay then you gotta work for it!

They might seem like long days but they're pretty easy going. Not really a fan of being a sweaty mess all day. You wanna put yourself in an early grave by working like a mad man to get home one hour earlier that's up to you lol.

Them extra hours are the ones that are killin' me, though. Just love driving 200 miles back from a job to get on with the paperwork.

Another benefit of working like that is you have time to think about what you're doing so you can get it right first time, saving materials and ultimately time and money. Unfortunately a lot of inexperienced supervisors would rather see movement than thinking.

Damians way of thinking sounds the same has mine! I like a smoke break and plenty of coffee, but also put in a full days work, which does mean I get home later, but as he says what is the point of ripping your tripe out. If you charge a sensible price for a professional service then you can make a good living and still be alive to spend it.

We have 3 of them 1 is ok other are joke. I refuse to have them anywhere near, their tools are cable cutters and screwdriver only. They turn up high often. They full of dogs poooo.

Work smart not hard boys

sounds like my rate of working is coming back into fashion. a lot slower than 20 years ago, but can still give some of the whippersnappers a run for the money.

I tell u. I would work for you in a heart beat. If it was not so far away

Our current apprentice has a complete lack of initiative, on the plus side, if we need him for a job we can guarantee finding him sitting in the workshop playing on his phone.
Confiscate it and let him have it at breaks. Tell him that if you catch him sitting around when there's stuff that needs to be done you'll kick his arse and dock his pay.
See how quick he'll buck his ideas up then.

Agree with Trev , get him told, and remind him you're the Boss not him.
This is half the problem with the world now! everyone is scared of repercussions for instilling a bit of discipline.
Give him a good kick up the Arse.

I have a couple of points to make. I think schools hands are tied by government. They are there to hopefully teach kids to read, write and add up. Some people seem to view school as proxy parents and also child minders ect ect. Yet as soon as school tries to punish an unruly kid there is hell to pay.
Teachers are assaulted every day in the UK they have had their pay frozen for years and had their contracts altered and pensions buggered....and you want THEM to go that extra mile only to be met with abuse from parents and kids and probably their bosses too....buggered if I would do their job.
I agree with parents being a major part of the problem I am sad to say. If parents prepared their kids for school life better by teaching them the basics at home, Get discipline down at home and enforce it well. Both parents need to be 100% together in this. Back up the school and become involved with the school and you will get better results.
I also think motivation can be encouraged even at school leaver age. It is very easy to say "they did the job but then twiddled there thumbs". Explain to the kid that if they are finished what they are doing they should either tidy up site or offer to assist you/other spark on site....or god forbid get to watch a professional in action (Is that not what learning and teaching is all about ? )

Now as for working past break time...staying on late for "free" ect ect. Sorry to me that's just bull. You go to work to get paid. You are not there for bloody love are you ? Now there is such a thing as come and go and that is fine. I have stayed late "free" plenty of times but only where I get reciprocal treatment from the employer. It sounds to me that the OP is a fantastic employer who I personally would have no trouble staying on late for due to the way he describes his working day/ethic/life.
But I think the other poster who was moaning about two new starts turning up and not immediately working as part of the team by working past breaks and staying on late ect ect.....why the hell should they. Until they have established themselves within the team and company as a whole then they are there to do a job and get paid by the hour. If you think they are too slow then after a week or two start pushing them a bit. If they are not up to the job then get someone in who is.....if you cant find anyone who is up to scratch then IMHO it would point to you being the problem rather than the new starts.
One last point if guys are continually finding themselves working past finish time for "free" with no reward then they are covering up a major issue....the person who priced and planned the job is not doing their job properly. To be fair "company men" do get on my nerves with their little cliques and backstabbing and bitching ect....some of them are worse than women ffs.....And I say this as someone who has had the pleasure of man management for over 10 years. Give a bit and take a bit back......that 30min early shoot on a Friday will be paid back x10 every time they work for you. If you are in the **** be straight with the guys and give them a good reward for getting you out of the brown stuff. It is not all one way.
