fryer is tripping RCBO. continuity 18.9 ohms, IR @500V > 999 Meg. it's a basic fryer, switch, stat and element. no visible wiring faults. got to assume it's element breakdown as it warms up. oh, and tried it on a different circuit just in case the RCBO was to blame. still tripping after about 5 secs.

It's ducked.

Buy a new one and stop being so stingy.

Anyway, what's wrong with a "real" chip pan on a gas ring??

See what happens when you overcomplicate things by involving electrickery and electrons & things??

Drop the elephant off and power up to ensure no issues with stat... but yes does sound like a element fault that shorts/leaks down as the metal expands with heat hence its not detectable before hand.... if its leakage tripping the rcbo then stat should be ok but if a short then i'd order a stat as well they are prone to damage during a S/C ... stick it on a mcb to see if leakage was the cause.

LOL. you wet the bed again? it's in a pub kitchen. not mine. element is ordered.

good idea. i bit awkward to do though working on a freezer with the damn thing dripping oil everywhere.

Put earth leakage clamp around L+N wires and run fryer, hopefully you'll be able to see leakage that way. If it's 3-phase then clamp L1, L2, L3 and N.

RCBO would not hold long enough for that, marvo. and no non-RCD circuits to try it on. good idea , though.

Let's see if I've got this right.

You have an electric chip pan that trips the RCBO and suspect that the fault is somewhere in the chip pan?

You think Marvo has the right idea but you can't do it because you have an RCBO in the way and there are no non-RCD protected circuits??

How is this electric chip pan connected - is it a plug or what??

Is in not possible to rig a temporary supply from somewhere without the RCD / RCBO and plug the chip pan into that or link-out the RCBO even just for the test that Marvo suggests or am I misunderstanding this and spouting bowlocks?

geordie, the only way to do as you suggest would be for the pub to close down the kitchen while i climbed up on a worktop to get into the DB, the cost involved both in my time and the pub's would be more than 2 new elements.

haha. the actual electrical part sits on top of 1 side of a dual fryer. i could take it away, but then would have no means of immersing in an oil bath, so could not function test it. if i took the whole fryer away, pub meals would be without chips for a few days.

something like this:
