Hi all
my local college has just contacted me about doing a course called city&guilds 2396,is this the old 2391 20 design course and also how hard is this exam and is it worth doing as i only do domestic work part time working for my self. What does the course include?? the course would be done at night college over 3 months one night a week

Richard

It's the QCF updated course which was the 2391-20. It is the design course and far beyond the scope of typical domestic installations.
Exam isn't too tough depending on how you approach things.

If this is an area you wish to pursue out of interest then it is worth while.

I teach the course.

It will involve studying the design process, and understanding how BS 7671 relates to the design process.

It will consist of a project, covering the following outcomes;

Understand the relationship with statutory and non statutory requirements relating to electrical design, construction management and verification
Understand the electrical installation design, construction and commissioning process
Understand fundamental principles for the design and installation of associated protective systems relating to electrical installations
Understand factors that affect choice of sources and environmental technologies used within electrical installation design
Be able to apply design and verification procedures for single and poly phase electrical installations

and a written exam based on the following;

Understand the electrical installation design, construction and commissioning process
Understand BS 7671 requirements relating to electrical installation design

As well as exam you are expected to complete a commercial installation design project at home , including - design calcs , Test / inspect proceedure , maintainence regime , technical drawings ...ect.
Recommended project time at least 40 hrs , but really needs 50 - 60 hrs.
Not completely rocket science but you may struggle with only domestic experience , but only you can gauge your ability.
And as a level 4 qualification it wont be a walk in the park lol.
Regards.
