Would like to get into this later in life

A few questions ---

How do I go about getting into this re qualifications etc?
What is the average salary?

Thanks in advance for replies

I don't know about salary but the city and guilds 7304 is a start. Essentially, with this qual, you can teach (to adults) any subject as long as you are qualified in that subject itself. I believe this is how it stands at the moment anyway.

Most colleges that teach apprentices have 2 levels of staff. Instructors who teach the practical side and lecturers who teach the theory side. To be an instructor you only need to be a time served tradesman good at all things in electrical installation. To progress to lecturer it is good to have an ONC or HNC in electrical engineering. It is an advantage to have a minimum teaching qualification PTLLS (look it up) but most colleges give training on this. Best advice speak to HR in your local college and see what is available. Salaries Instructors up to 24K lecturers up to 32K but you often start at a lower scale and get annual increments if you stick at it.

The PTLLS is the 7303. To teach electrical installation in a college you would probably need CTLLS which is the 7304. I started teaching Door Supervision, Physical Intervention and Conflict Management with the 7303 as these are all level two courses but I had to move up to the 7304 when I started teaching level three. I would imagine that the 7304 is what you'd need to teach electrical installation as students would eventually be studying at level three however I could be wrong. I would say with certainty though that the 7303 (PTLLS) is the bare minimum you would need at the moment.

i have it on good authority (engineering technician at local college), if you have the knowledge, you can teach to one level below your highest qualification, you can take teaching qualifications as you do this and are encouraged to do so. would probably also recommend an unhealthy dose of diazipan and anger management prior to meeting your students.

An interesting one......this thread. May look into something like this (in the distant future) lol but when you have had enough of banging backboxes into walls and yanking cable/s about etc.....could be replacing one kind of stress for another though.....................

I just looked up the city + guilds 7304 and found this
To take the Certificate, you'll need access to 30 hours of teaching practice in a recognised lifelong learning location.

That sort of introduces the chicken and egg

Yes, this is correct. The teaching qualifications you would aim for would probably be at first the PTLLS (7303) and then the CTLLS (7304). Without these, your teaching would have to be heavily supervised.

At least when teaching Electrical Installation to rowdy 16 year olds they all speak english. Try teaching Door Supervision to a 30 strong class full of immigrants who have no grasp whatsoever of the english language! This is especially frustrating when trying to explain that what you are about to teach them will save their life when some nasty geezer pulls a knife on them and they look at you with the same expression Manuel looks at Basil with! "Que?!"

You are correct, you can't take the CTLLS (7304) without having the 30 hours experience. However, the PTLLS (7303) is widely regarded as the qualification you need with regards to getting your foot in the door. I got the 7303, then taught, then got the 7304.
