My boiler seems to be playing up. It's a Baxi Platinum Combi 40 HE A. Until recently it's been working fine but now I only get hot water when the heatings is turned on ie turn the stat up as there's no programmer. Any ideas?

The usual cause is the diverter valve.

Drop a PM to Chris Murphy on this forum - he's an excellent Heating Engineer.

Sorry to be a bit abrupt, but I did type a more detailed post just now but this bloody glitchy forum software crashed - AGAIN - when I tried to post and I lost it all.

So much for all the bugs being fixed !!

Call British Gas, they'll send out a Heating Engineer to sort it out.
I've seen the adverts on telly!

Aye that'll be right.

When a certain young lady of my acquaintance was living in Wales she had a maintenance contract with British Grasp and a bloke spent the best part of a week trying to fix her combi boiler and was getting nowhere.

In desperation, she phoned me while the bloke was still there struggling and I diagnosed the fault there & then over the phone and what to do to fix it.

He did what he was told ( sensible lad ! ) and there were no more problems after that.

They are cowboys with all the best toys to play with and a decent wage to take home - but they are still cowboys.

I called a Combi guy out years ago to sort mine out, beautifully self plumbed and still under warranty.
He was amazed at the quality of my pipework!!! How hard is it to run a few pipes on a new install???!!!

Had same problem on my glow worm rubbish combi, diverter valve or activator got new on e-bay and cobbled it in, took about an hour and 60 quid parts,
I run the heating one a week during the summer to keep it running sound, I hear most faults happening right now as people expect it to just work after a dormant period, next step for me is fitting a magnaclean filter as there's still cack in the system although I put a cleaner in it six months ago.

Not hard at all. The trick is to think it through carefully and picture it all in you mind, then look for plan "B" and sometimes plan "C". If you just dive straight in it will be a dog's breakfast. It's just the same a a leccy rewire really.

I fitted one on my own system and it does the job, BUT I fitted the Fernox version ( forget the name of it ) on my mate's system and it's better - more "user friendly" to clean out and it's about the same price.

To clean the Magnaclean you shut the water off to it, remove the top and pull its guts out. With the Fernox, you shut the water off to it then lift the magnetic rod out of its pocket in the top (no water escapes) and open a tap on the bottom of the casing. Dead easy !!
