Oven Isolation

Hi,

For a double oven hard wired on its own dedicated oven circuit, is a separate isolation switch still required, or is the circuit breaker at the consumer unit (located nearby in the kitchen cupboard) adequate to isolate the oven?

Its better to have local, obvious isolation in the event of an accident, or maintenance

Would be interested to hear the reason behind the question. One might suspect an issue has arisen right or wrong (?)

With regards Isolation a point to consider, it is not unheard of for appliance delivery teams to refuse to connect a new oven if no local Oven / Hob Isolation in the form of the switch is present.

The house's existing double oven was wired by plug connecting into the 2.5mm kitchen ring final.

I guess one answer to your question could lie in the oven manufacturers installation instructions - if they say to use a 2 pole isolation switch, then the suggestion of using the MCB wouldn't comply (assuming that's a single pole disconnect).

Devil's advocate mode: The CU main switch would provide DP isolation.

Isn't distance a factor? Isolator should be within 2m of what it isolates?

I started under the 14th edition which became 15th mid apprenticeship. The 14th Edition of the IET wiring regulations did have a distance of 6 ft maximum distance stipulation for a cooker switch (becoming 2 mtrs in Amendment) . This was done away with [I believe] in the 15th Edition. Such a requirement is not now the case.

The 15th bringing in the age of the 'if it moves, does not move, might move, someone maybe saw it move... or stay still then bond it'. Still, it taught you how to drill Stainless as drilling Stainless became the second most important role of the apprentice. You can probably guess the first in the order of importance.

Regulation 132.15.201, while not applying specifically to cookers, requires “Effective means [of isolation], suitably placed for ready operation… so that all voltage may be cut off from… all equipment, as may be necessary to prevent or remove danger”.
It wasn't good practice for the installer to have omitted such, but there is no specific regulation insisting that one is mandatory.

It has already been mentioned on the need to refer to manufacturers instructions.
A oven under 3 KW can generally be plugged in and are at times supplied new fitted with a 13 Amp BS 1363 plug (I assume single oven is being referred to not a free standing cooker).
These ovens are generally 2.5 / 2.8 KW. Either way certainly <3KW
You mention a 'double oven' and such is likely [I would expect] to exceed these wattage values and, should that be the case, it would be advised this be addressed by a competent person.

The BS 1363 plug is an accepted means of isolation.
