I was thinking about fire systems for small buildings of flats, and what the best way to design them is. My main question is to do with the divide between communal areas e.g staircases, landings and each flat. whats the best way to approach this?...one big system throughout, or main system in communal areas and standard domestic smoke/heat alarms in each flat....as surely you wouldn't want one system running though out the entire building so if someone burns their toast in the morning they then need an entire main alarm reset..... all ideas and guidance appreciated.

For this type of building we would usually install domestic type smoke detectors in each flat and also a BS5839 Part 1 system with automatic smoke detection and call points to cover escape routes and any other rooms that present a high fire risk.

But all this depends on the layout how many storey's the building has.

As MKMK says, you really need to be familiar with the regulations and the design of fire alarm systems before carrying out any work.
