Commercial Lighting & Emergency Lights

Can someone explain how to run a lighting circuit with emergency lights & keyswitch. Basically ive never installed keyswitch before so confuses me..

4 lights 2 Emergency 1 Switch 1 Keyswitch

Its gonna be pretty straight forward but cant get my head around it

as mat said more info required you can use 3 core t&e but depends were your or how your installing it

Same as a switch essentially other than you take a permanent feed to the Em lights from the k/s and make sure the switch gets its supply from the k/s so the k/s actually works how it's meant to, however I've only ever done it in 4 core swa so could be other ways via other cables...well definitely probably. There are loads of ways to wire lights just get the concept of how it has to work and I'm sure you'll work it out yourself. Also if you're using kilk plugs make sure you buy Em ones for your em lights because the normal ones have the A terminal come screwless. And just carry the permanent live in the loop in all the others.

Just run an extra core to the combined with emergency's, if it were in T&E you would use 3 core to the 2 combined lights first then twin to the other 2 after, if in singles just add the extra core, the key switch will need to isolate both lives though, you don't want to kill the feed and then get a whack from the switch wire, the best way to do that is to feed the normal switch through the key as well as the permanent feed to the light.

The key switch shouldn't switch both line and switch line, testing of the emergency lights should be able to be done without effecting the rest of the circuit. If your working on the circuit it should be locked off at the supply as the key switch is just that a switch, not an isolator my friend.

I disagree, if the unit is a combined unit then I would also kill the switchwire as well as the feed, Why leave a live wire in the light even if testing it? don't make sence to me, I would even have the neutral broken via a double pole key also, in a large area with a dozen lights and 2 combined emeergency's I could understand it but just 4 lights in a room and 2 combined then whats the problem?

well you just need one extra core then luke from the key to the 2 lights concerned.

There's two ways of wiring EM lights for testing.
One way will cut all power, which kind of makes a key switch redundant, as switching the switch on the MCB will have the same effect.
The other way is to wire a key switch so that only the power to the EM light batteries is cut.
The firsy way is my preference, as it not only allows you to check the EM lights are operational, but also to check that they are providing sufficient light.
However, it will usually entail that testing is conducted out of hours.
The other way allows you to check that the EM lights are operational, but doesn't affect the normal lighting, so testing can be conducted within working hours.
At the end of the day, it's down to what the client wants.

Why not leave a live wire in, no one should be going near it?. The key switch is provided as a means to test the emergency lights. Although I thought you was making a generalized comment but like you say there's only 4 combined fittings in a room here, down to the design then isn't it.

Lux readings can be taken by switching the normal lights off while you do it rather than them being off for full duration of tests.

Commercial Lighting & Emergency Lights

Just take your permanent live off your key switch and your switched live of your 10a (your normal light switch) to each fitting and put the permanent in a connector block on the non emergency fitting.

This allows the lights to be moved around a lot easier in the future if the client changes there mind and is a lot easier the wire due to just taking the same cable to each fitting, 3 core t&e or brown black blue and green/yellow signals.
