Hi

A friend is looking to have a 3kw water heater fitted in his clinic and although I am competent enough to fit it, I am not a qualified electrician other than having done my 2 years C&G's course.

I have no idea regarding the rules concerning commercial premises and wondered where both I and my friend stood regarding the fitting of this.

Many thanks

Jon

As Durham says in his first post, the same regs apply irrespective of the application. So this heater must be installed in accordance with BS7671:2008 17th edition, and the manufacturers instructions. My guess without looking would be that it should be installed on its own circuit, and if that circuit is not RCD protected, then the appliance should be, using a RCD fused spur.

Cheers.........Howard

Thanks Howard, so following your advice - The original plan was to run it off the ring circuit connected to an RCD fused spur ?!?!?!

Would this be suffice ?

I assume from your message that as long as it is fitted safely and correctly anyone who is competent can fit it ?!?!

Thanks Jon

How are you going to erect your spur, if your going run your cable surface, then you won't need to RCD the original ring final circuit.

You could fit a RCD FCU to be overly safe but if you decide on a normal one that is ok. You will though need to complete a MIEWC to ensure that the circuit is ok after fitting your spur ie disconnection times with your ZS, IR etc
