Good Afternoon,

I'm an independent Property Manager working with a handful of Investment Landlords in London.

I was let down yesterday (26/11/12) by an NICEIC electrician who quoted £140 to carry out an EICR test and PAT on a two bed flat in South London, confirmed by email and text.

I only found out at 6pm when I called to find out how he'd got on, that he had not bothered to turn up and in addition hadn't bothered to call me or the tenant. When asked why this was, he slammed the phone down. A true professional.

However, I'm now in a fix as I need to get this work done for the same amount as the Landlord has already paid and it will not reflect well on me if I have to go asking for more money at this stage.

Are there any professionals working in the Crystal Palace area or whereabouts who could help by any chance?

Thanks.

it does sound a bit under priced, but stick around. you may find a forum member near you may help.

Was there any particular reason you mentioned"Niceic" spark,it did not seem relevent to the complaint

Maybe try in future engaging a spark from another scheme.you may have no extra advantage with dependability, but you will have the surety that an actual electrician will come knocking on your door, not some labourer riding the scheme flag

Probabily realised after giving you his quote it was not worth his while

Thanks Ian, But no, it's not that the quote was too cheap and not worth his while as £140 is the quoted amount clearly stated on his website. I checked and double checked this by phone and email before engaging him and requesting the sum from the Landlord.
Some people just lack professionalism and etiquette. I was called an 'idiot' for simply asking why he hadn't thought to call me and let me know that he wasn't coming.

Thanks, That was the price stated on his website and confirmed in writing by him quite a few days before the work was due to start. I hope to find someone as to ask the Landlord for more money after confirming the initial amount makes me look unprofessional.

While you're waiting, you may like to make a complaint about him to NICEIC. They've recently been trying to tell us just how great they are .

Thanks Geordie Spark, I did call the NICEIC and they told me to complete the online complaints form, which I've done. They say they'll respond within 5 days, so let's see what happens.
I wouldn't normally have bothered but this chap was verbally abusive when asked why he couldn't have called to let me know that he wasn't planning on turning up...really uncalled for, when a simple apology would've sufficed.

Thanks for that Des, Well, my usual electrician is winding down activities and so I thought that by ensuring that the chosen electrician was a member of a recognised body, I'd be assured of getting not just a competant operative but also someone reliable, trustworthy...a good sort if you know what I mean. And that's why I mentioned that he was a member of the NICEIC...how wrong I was considering the insults hurled at me.

This has nothing to do with his scheme, they don't pay his bills. It's the guys own business and if he chooses to behave a certain way that's upto him - he'll loose business in the long run, how can you complain to a scheme when the guy hasn't done any works.

Well, hopefully even if they can't do anything about it outwardly, they may mark his file internally (especially if others complain in the future) as someone who is bringing their scheme and the industry into disrepute, one never knows how these things can end up.

as he never actually did any work a complaint is pointless, the NICEIC take complaints seriously but that assumes work has been carried out and then not to the customers satisfaction.

I find it hard to believe a electrician would just insult a customer for no apparent reason, 2 sides to all stories IMO, not saying your to blame OP, but it seems almost unimaginable a company would just insult someone for no reason, come on what actually happened.

I have never been let down by Property Managers or Estate Agents!

May I ask what professional body that regulates and annually monitors the performance of these professions I need to complain to should it ever happen?

In the meantime, may I suggest that you do what is done in most instances, and get a personal recommendation from some of your contacts within the property business. That is how its done properly.
