I'm currently working for a sewerage company doing a lot of confined space work with breathing apparatus etc ... Would my confined space training and experience make me more employable when I obtain my qualifications and gain electrical experience?

Depends on what sort of locations you intend working in.

Unless you already have it of course but if not wouldn't you still have to show your certificate with ID to show you have completed the relevant training.

I've already done the high risk course and have done a few entries. Mostly large aeration tanks which have some lighting and motors etc as well as filtration beds. Haven't had a chance to speak to any sparks on site and my company just deals in the cleaning and camera surveying of the systems.

I could see myself being here for a few more years whilst I'm studying and gaining my qualifications. So I'm just hoping the experience I am getting will help in finding employment in the futire. Either that or will keep my fingers crossed that confined space training will be required for working in lofts

I got it whilst I was working in mines and quarries. I wouldn't say it made me more employable when I moved on, but It certainly didn't hurt. It's another string to your bow.

Also means you’ll be first in line to go down the service duct or up in the loft;)

remember years ago, went for a job that required confined space experience. offered to take the guy down an extremely wet and tight cave on the sunday. down the hole at 10.00am, wet siuts etc. out and cahanged for the pub at 2.00pm. for some strange reason he declined the offer.

Not all confined spaces are claustrophobic.

I've been inside a dosing tank that was classed as a confined space due to access. You'd have fit a decent sized plane in there!

An old saying is there is no harm in another string to the bow but confined space entry certification is only useful in very specialised industries and may not appeal to anyone in the lets say domestic sector. My advice is if its free then do it and do any courses that you can get or get offered.

thanks for the advice chaps ...

ive done another couple of entries since i last posted and have been looking at the control systems for the wet wells where i work.

im gonna concentrate on getting my level 2 out of the way and getting as much "free" training i can get with my current job ...

Nothing is free mate, there is always a catch, do the training you become the expert, could be benificial, but it could be your downfall.

i know pete .... if i leave within a year i have to pay back 50% of the training costs ... im looking to get a mortgage this time next year so i plan to be here for the foreseeable so it doesn't matter really ...

in an ideal world id like to get my level 2 out of the way then approach the water company we are contracted for to see if they would take me on as a trainee. lots to think about but right now all im thinking about is getting through my level 2.
