This is my first posting here so hello to you all. Thought you might look at this. Dont blame you if you laugh.
Went to a job today. The customer said ligt flikered on sometimes. so i had a look and seen the rose was cracked bad so i said to fit a new one.Turned power off at breaker and took down. Now i did quickly look and notiecd a blue jumper from loop to neutral but werent worryed thought easy to sort.
Seperated out the 4 cores out and put my trusty voltstick on each with power back on.
1 was not live which i guessedwas neutral.
But 3 were live indicated by voltstick which has been good for me for 2 yeers.
turned off at light switch but made no difference. Odd so i thought.
Took measure from radiator which was bonded ok i had checked. 240v to 1 black core which voltstick says is live. 0v to other black core voltstick says is 0v. so all good so far. marked them brown and blue. but other black and single red 3v and 5v to earth-so werent live afterall. Voltstick dodgy?
But then measured between live and neutral cores with my Fluke tester which i know is good. 240v ok. but live to others (both pretty sure) 240v. But between these 2 and neutral was also 240v.???
Bit puzzled but i rigged it up easy enough so switch worked light ok. Sorted until woman said ligts in kitchen and dining room not working. Put voltstick to them showed live on both sides so guessed must have lost neutral to these.
Went back to problem ligt and tried to figure how i could supply neutral to other lights which had worked when i came in - i saw them. really confusing now. Customer swears worked fine most of time and didnt work only sometimes it would flicker a bit but then come on. She was genuine enough so i had to try to swap cores to get it all to work.
Finally after walking back to consumer and back again and again i did it how i knew it couldnt work
But it did!
Put all blacks together. Thats the 1 not live with voltstick and at 240v to radiator.
and the 1 that voltstick said live and was 240v with radiator.
and the 1 black that was at 240v to both of these.
The red must have been the switched live if the voltstick can be believed. but i was so confused i dont even no now. Glad to get away and didnt even charge her much so embarrased.
So laugh if you want but any1 know what the hell was going on cus i love to no.
Sorry if this is long first post will make my next 1 short

You could of traced the switch wire by joining out your cables and belling out at the switch, thats your switch wire identified. The other loop wires to other lights could have been identified in the same manner.
You say the loop was linked to the neutral !!! bit odd that, you say it flickered on sometimes, what without being switched on ?? or when switched, might have just been a loose connection at the switch or the rose. How many T + E's were at the rose i got confused reading ?
Do you always mark old colours with new? I'd have marked the blk with red, and left the red red.
I'd stick to using your fluke not the voltstick for this scenario. Bet the client looked a bit surprised when you started testing to the radiator:D
The worrying thing about your post is that it sounds like you used trial and error to get it to work.:(
