Hi all, a newbie requiring advice.
I have been asked to fit a fan within a bathroom with the following constraints:
1. fan needs to work in daylight when light is off.
2. ideally on a timer so steam can be removed after showering.
3. humidistat not to be used as past units did not work to well.
4. be able to use 3a fans.
5. cheap as poss so no expensive fans or expensive pir's

So i have thought it would be best to connect the fan to the showers power.

My question is:
1. Is this ok to do or is there a better idea?
2. A timed fan requires a live and switched live, so is a fused spur available with twin fuses?
3. My idea is to tap into the supply side of the shower switch to provide the live feed and then tap into the load side of the shower switch to provide the switched live. Both lives will go to separate fused spurs (located in assessable attic) then both spurs will be connected to an isolation switch (in wall be bathroom door) then of to the fan. Is this ok or am i missing something?

Cheers for your help.

I can feel a ban coming on lol Why not wire a clock point or maybe a 5amp socket from your shower circuit, the possibilities are endless FFS common be real

OK still no technical reason then.

You could could not wire a socket as it could be subject to overload. A clock point ? Well you give me a reason why not !!!!!!!
Come on show some electrical knowledge not just give flippant comments which seems to be all you usually come up with looking at your other threads.

Please enlighten me then as you are clearly an electrical genius. Oh and please give regulations and sound electrical reasons for it not to be done. Don't just say it's rough let's have some indication you actually know why it shouldn't be done and are not just following the pack.

Its all unorthodox , I mean why bother with any dedicated circuits , why not have a couple off circuits and install fused spurs all over the house , and whos gonna be able to label the DB , you would have a list as long as your arm , just where would it end if you allowed one thing , why not allow more and more . We all want to go to a dis board an isolate what the circuit says , but how can you when you can spur off anything you like ,,,

Carry on, regardless, I give up..................nothing wrong in your eyes so yep just carry on, loop a fan from a shower supply, That's the sort of trick I'd expect from a DIYer not a skilled Electrician !!!!!!!!!!!! That's hardly flippant comments, why not have a changeover switch so when the sower is off it could feed say a water heater or maybe a light with a label to state shower not In use .................

section 314 can be interpetrated several ways, It speaks volume to me, as does professional installation work, all this cowboy talk has worn me out, do what you like I don't care, if you are happy and think your right then good for you, funny how only the guys who have done this type of work defend it, good night and I hope your home doesnt burn down.

Not usual practice is one thing, nothing in the regs to stop that. Electrically sound so no problem there either. Correct labelling at the CU would prevent any confusion as to what the circuit supplies. Even a wiring diagram is not beyond the realms of possibility is it ?
I think having an understanding of electrical engineering would help with the blinkering of some people on here. Domestic is only one small part of this varied industry. It is also arguably the least technical.

hi mechalec. firstly, i'm unable to enter any debate re quoting regs etc and am sure you have put challenge out with sufficient knowledge to 'win'. fair play to you sir. what i was wondering was would you mirror your set up at a clients house and certify? if so, i will research as it could prove useful in other areas in future. thank you.

All I asked for was a valid reason why it would be wrong, electrically and which regulation it doesn't comply with.
You have provided neither. So I would ask you to reply only when you can answer either question rather than just trying to inflate your already ridiculously high post count.

I have told you in my last post and the fact only a cowboy would do it

Well would you ? I am yet to get a valid reason why not. It seems that there are many who all follow the crowd in poo pooing the idea but have no real reason why not.

I'm just bumping some of the older threads in the general electrical forum that had a lot of replies. They might not be current topics, if they're not, just ignore them and they'll soon drop off the list. If you DO wish to add a reply and get the conversation going again, feel free to do so. Your input might help somebody else in the future.
