Hi all,

I'm in the process of changing the sockets in my house (just the face plates) and I'm having serious trouble fitting the ones with three wires where there's a spur.

Can I just crimp the three wires together and then one wire out the other end to connect? If not any advice please to try and save some of my dignity whilst trying to change sockets?!?!

Many thanks
Gareth

Thanks all for the replies, just to answer a couple of questions:

I haven't twisted the cores together
The cores sit in the socket fine and the screw seems to tighten fine on top but they still come loose and out (crap sockets maybe?!)

Just want to explore all options before calling out an electrician to change two damn sockets!

Thanks

Where did you buy the sockets?

sounds like crap sockets. buy some decent ones, BG nexus, click, crabtree, MK, acel (the £3 ones from leecy center, not the cheap crap).

b&q are usually MK. should not be a problem, unlike their CUs where the MCBs won't line up with the cover and a hammer has to be introduced.

Surely there not mk or its the fact the op is limp wristed?

Your saying your inserting 3 cores into it and tightening it up and its mot biting.

Is this happening in live, neutrel and earth terminals or just one?

They sell cheap ones too though...marbro or along them lines...

Could be cheap sockets, are you also using the correct screwdriver?...no a Christmas cracker one or anything?...

I think you need some help from an electrician. It sounds like your struggling to make a good connection, which can result in heat damage, which could cost you your home if your unlucky. You obviously not competent or experienced enough to do this so the best adivce I would get professional help. I don't know if your location is visable, but if you post it up here i'm sure someone nearbyb will be able to pop by and sort things out for you. Sorry to be blunt :)
