Discuss Consumer unit installation in the DIY Electrical Advice area at ElectriciansForums.net

The term 'ring main' is still in use today in professional circles with the same meaning it has always had, a distribution circuit in the form of an open ring, usually at 11KV.

It has never been the correct term for a ring final circuit.

d, thanks for the correction ... I had a feeling that it was only ever used by us, the great unwashed ... or uninitiated in the arcane world of electrical distribution and installations. Unfortunately I had not known for sure!

I think it was originally 'ring final sub circuit' but I would have to go and find my copy of the 13th edition to check on that.

I think that I may have unwisely chosen to post here, judging by some responses.

Would this extra information help answering my question? If so then I will provide as necessary.

TD, answering your question is an incredibly difficult balancing act! More information is required ... but I hope that you have picked up by now the fact that you appear to anyone with some training in the 'field', of electrical installation, to be insufficiently equipped to be doing what you propose to do!

I humbly suggest that you contact one of the moderators for access to the DIY section of the Forum ... Marvo is one of the moderators who was on a little while ago ... PM him or I can on your behalf if you like!

That would be much appreciated if you would contact for me. Thanks

I have PMd Marvo ... not sure when he will be back online ... look out for the Mods, any with a green dot next to their tag are online. Click on their name and send them a PM to ask to be given access to the DIY section!

PS, my current (not flow of charge, he he) consumer unit is a wylex wire fuse relic. Floyd Mayweather Jnr could install a safer modern CU!

Lol, buses  nice one.

TD what is your level of electrical knowledge? Post up or PM me/any other Mod. (thread stays here until we know)

A badly installed modern CU could easily be a lot less safe than a correctly installed Wylex fuse board.

Not everything designed or made in the last 25 - 50 - 100 years is really an advance on what went before. At least a fault in your current Fuse box should not leave a molten heap of plastic on the floor or result in a fire in your home. Workmanship, materials and build quality have suffered from a race to the bottom on cost leading to a reliance on technology to make up the gap! Not a well engineered solution I fear!

TD is an electronics technician and not an electrician. That explains the way he has posted his question.

If it is an old Wylex 3036 C/U and you want to protect existing circuits with RCD's, may be best to employ an electrician to carry out tests (EICR) before any changes are undergone.

We shall wait for TD to post back up.
