Yes, you can, but the supply to the consumer unit should be disconnected, usually by pulling the main fuse.

Hi Colin.
I will definitely be of the camp to say a definite no to this. We can't possibly determine your competence to open up a consumer unit, after a few words written on the net.
There could be a number of dangerous problems that could occur if you do this.
I can't actually see any 30mA RCD protection, so It would be a very good idea to get the board updated. The electrician would then make sure the new consumer unit is properly secured to the wall.

Unless I’m mistaken I thought the DNO is the only one who can do this legally?
Pulled hundreds if not thousands of cut out fuses.had to give the list of addresses to sse and they would issue red tamper proof paper seals.kitchen contract with council in early 2000s.if you have there permission and are part of a scheme like select I believe this still to be the same.otherwise when the city Council are doing 40 kitchen upgrades a WEEK do you think they would hire out some one
to follow you around like a puppy You had to give your scheme number to sse ?I guess to show you were at least competent

Under no circumstances pull the main fuse as suggested above. Get an electrician involved to advise.
Another thread I would guess but it should be mandatory for dno to fit isolator.and why do they go about sealing consumers Henley blocks and anything else they can seal with their fancy crimppers.thats the consumer
Equipment. Leave it alone .there only concern is there side but where does there side stop and consumer side starts.

and anything else they can seal with their fancy crimppers
'Fancy Crimpers' 'anything else they can seal' oh they are more than that young Sir and you dismiss lightly the power that burns away the soul that comes with such.
It is said power corrupts... but not half as much as the temptation that could corrupt that came in those days gone by, young and innocent, working for a DNO and being issued with [official] lead seals, knarly wire and a sealing crimp!
The words of the wise old ones heard on the wind blowing up from Salford just off the number 66 bus route. "you now need never buy another pint ever again"
Of course I resisted all such nonsense.
