Hi there folks,
Have been using BG boxes for years, now getting fed up with all these knockouts at wrong size for 3rd ed glands.
Have complained to BG but they dont reply, started back with MK but their just the same !. Have any of you complained to these Mfg to get their knockouts at the right size so we dont have to modify ?.
Also found the BG High Integ Units difficult to fit RCBO's, cable too short and mains bus too small for connections.

Never mind all that palaver with glands, just mount the CU on a nice new backboard spaced off on small battens then bring everything in through the big rear knockout/s [Suitably grommeted of course]. :)

The same here, glands and trunking e.t.c as a last resort really.

I have always used Hager where I can, at least their mcb's sit straight and they look of better build quality than most other manufacturers out there.

The design range of consumer units are nice.

Just my opinion.

This is what you want

plenty of sparks... a file, holesaw + trunking if needed.

I've noticed recently people in the wholesalers buying a 32mm plastic stuffer and using that to take the meter tails. Also seen some finished jobs using said method and not that impressed. Imo there is no need for this as a blind 25mm stuffer works just fine and leaves a far better finish as you can dress the tails in tight to the cu instead of the big loop a 32mm gland produces. Does anyone have a reason why people think this is required by 3rd amendment? I might have missed this memo.

Well it's a good idea to secure the tails as well as protecting from abrasion, especially in a metal box. :) But with my method of bringing tails in the back with all the other cables I generally secure them externally with a couple of small SWA cleats.

A thread on how to make holes, I am glued to this.

Maybe the mods should make this sticky?

As someone new to the industry I've never seen Q-Max punches before. They look like they produce a much cleaner hole than a hole saw. I've always been amazed at the mess my colleagues have been happy to make in a panel just to get another cable in. I've disliked the mess so much that I've Googled for a "swarf magnet" so I can tidy up afterwards! Never found one, just use a magnetic screwdriver, could do with something with a stronger magnet when working with ***** though, he's a messy b'stard. Those Q-Max punches look like they'd last longer than a hole saw too.
