right so i got a wee job for a guy today. he and his wife have just moved over from canada and they have brought a small collection (5-6)
of lounge lamps. He wants me to convert them from the 2 pin plug to the 3 pin variety.

Can i rewire them and terminate an earth onto the metal casing, the part where you screw the lamp into?

If they're SELV or double insulated they don't require an earth so you can just fit a 3-pin plug. If they have a transformer then it'll need to be replaced, if they're 110v lamps you should be able to replace with 230v equivalents. If they're not double insulated then you'll need to replace the cable with a 3-core and terminate the earth somewhere suitable.

Your having a larf surely?

Do you think it needs earthing?

Canada basically has the same rules as the UK as far as Class 1 & Class 2 lamp fittings and appliances. So if these lamp fittings are relatively new and not out of the ark, i would think they would be Class 2 fittings, be they of metallic construction or otherwise, if factory fitted with 2 core cords and two pin plug tops....
