cooker extractor hood

can i wire a cooker extractor hood to the lighting circuit? i've read the manual looking for specs but can't find any! is it ok to connect it to the lighting circuit?

there is no ring final above as its a bungalow, they have just replastered the kitchen and don't want me chasing walls to the loft space!

Why not. Just connect to sw fused con unit and fuse down to 3 amp. Fan is bound to be low consumption.

thanks i was thinking the same but then i thought why drop it down using a fused spur as the lighting circuit is on a 6a mcb! so you think it would be ok? the only load would be on the fan motor startup

You'd need to provide local isolation and a fused spur does this and can also be locked off without affecting the rest of the circuit. The fan will have a flex with maybe a plug top on it with a 3 amp fuse. As you can't put a socket on the lights a fused spur again allows you to maintain this fuse protection probably as per install instructions. Kick in on start will be minimal unless your fitting something special. The fuse won't provide much in the way of discrimination to the mcb especially if it's loaded but stick to manufacturers instuctions.

Are you thinking type C rather than a bit of plaster

thanks that where i am stuck i cant find any data on the fan motor anywhere, so a fused spur wouldnt do much, as the extractor has a plug (fitted with 13a fuse) i could just put a 3a fuse in the plug to a single socket off the lighting circuit

yes you could do that and mrs bloggs could potentially plug any appliance she saw fit into that socket, unless you were to make it a designated 5 amp socket

i fitted the most pointless extractor circuit other day!!! single point radial circuit 2m of cable 16A MCB (dedicated circuit for extractor hood!!!) lol...... took easy route, drill striaght out the back of outlet along outside wall and drilled back in approx 0.5 meter away! cable clipped at height away from hands and rats...!! all RCD protected lol....

Had one recently that the manufacturers engineer would not do an onsite warranty repair because he could not unplug the cooker hood to isolate it from the supply because it was connected to an FCU. Just something to bear in mind

I tend to use round pin sockets with fused plugs or the MK "T earth pin" sockets to provide a non standard connection point
