Went out to a house who said their cooker needs connecting up, connected it all up checked there was voltage going to the point and it was all fine just the cooker wasn't working, didn't have anything on me as it was a private and thought it would be a 5 min job. Got a text saying comet said there's only 120V going to it can I go around, I've never dealt with this problem before and could somebody recommend what I should do going to take a tester but am uncertain on this problem. Many thanks

you may find that you seem to have a good supply . how did you test for volts.? test L/E and if you get 230v then test L/N. if this is 120v then you have a lost Neutral. if it's a bad connection, you may find that you measure 230v at no load, but as soon as you load the circuit, it drops drastically.

I have experienced this is the past and the Neutral was indeed poorly connected/missing. Be sure to check the condition of the neutral as there may have been arcing occuring and therefore damage to the cable.

So what do I do if I do have a lost neutral is this in my hands ? And that's because I'm a contractor for a big firm but don't have a van and got called up and not driving for an hour to get a tester and back, I'm assuming the 120v is at the bullnose regards

In the place where the old cooker was? ..... or new circuit?

1/ Check the neutral connections from the mcb/rcbo through to the final cooker connections
2/ Some cookers, imported from Europe, run on 3-phase ( 2 lines) and require links to be made to convert to 230V.... so its RTFI before kick off.

Check the supply at the board and work downstream from there. Check for tightness of connection and volts at each point...isolator, main switch, mcb of cooker circuit etc etc.

No offence, but this is pretty basic stuff - are you happy to be doing this fault finding? Hopefully you have learned a lesson about basic checks before connecting anything - I'm not having a go, 'cos I guess we have all been there.

Regards.

Errrrr!! Your the electrician, You connected the cooker, ....Who else do you want to blame then?? The fact is, that you went to connect a cooker up with no test equipment, whether it was a private job, or for whatever other reason, You were the person responsible for it's connection to the supply. Next time you may want to wait, until you have the necessary test equipment to hand before connecting anything to the supply!!

Personally i've never understood an electrician at work, without his test equipment, but there you go!!!

Haha Engineer...whats that expression, pot calling kettle an angry basta*d? no wait thats not it...pot calling kettle..."first one on the scene to a total boob up post"?, oh no thats you...i admire your ability to bring down a donut of a question, pretty sure i may have suffered your brutal yet completely deserved responses once or twice. :33:

We are seeing more and more people coming on asking for advice and using the excuse ”I didn't have my test gear with me”. Is it that they don't have test gear? They don't know how to do the appropriate fault finding tests or is it laziness? Most times it is very basic stuff.

think it's down to lack of experience. op thinks..... call-out, connect cooker, 30 minutes , ÂŁ40 in arse pocket. i would at least have taken a voltage tester and a hammer.LOL.
