Hi,

I have been asked to look at the location of a cooker switch.

It is located 45cm above the cooker hob, I know cooker switches should be to the side and I seem to remember about 30cm from the edge of the cooker (Green IET Building Regulations guide book!).

At the present switch height there is a low risk of the person operating the switch being be burnt or the switch being damaged by heat.

Should it still be moved to one side?

Regards

Kev

I'm not completely sure but I think that 300mm is a recommendation concerning sockets from sinks and not a building reg as part P doesn't make any reference to it or any other distances.

the other thing to think about is if a pan or something goes up in flames do you really want to lean over flames to switch it off to isolate? (obviously on electric hobs) its best to stick it to the side.

if you have loads of steam as you do above cookers and an up to date CDU you could end up with a tripping RCD so move it , here what to do joint the cable in the position where the switch is and blank it off from the cooker connection plate add another 6mm up to a new cooker switch small bit of mini trunking to a new position then drop the out going to a new cooker connection plate , obviously any magor works in the kitchen then rewire it but this is a quick fix not the best way of doing it , but better than being called out to tripping RCD's when the switch has got damp from steam
