Hi everyone. This year I converted the loft into a bedroom. This was done when the weather was cooooool. Now, over the last few days I have found the temperature up there to be unbearably hot, even well after the sun has gone down. The skylights have been open the whole time. Anyone any bright ideas to cool things down? I have looked at stand alone air con units, but how effective are they, and also how quiet?

Eng, do you think the air con option is worth considering then? What's the noise level like on the free standing ones?

If you can't find any other solution ...Yes!!

Split air-con's are very quite, as all the so-called noisy stuff is in the outdoor/external unit. All you will have in the bedroom is the ''fan coil unit'' (FCU) which is very quite, probably quieter than a ceiling fan on high speed!! The noisy units are what i call wall bangers, which are all in one units that are fitted in/through wall or glass openings. So you would need to knock out a a bit of brickwork to fit one of those!! lol!! Split air-cons only need a 50mm hole at most, to run your pipework/cable out to the compressor unit...

What i do in Cyprus, is turn the A/C on the timer function, about an hour before i go to bed and have it turn off an hour after i go to bed. it'll keep the room cool for a a good few hours in a closed room, after it's switched off!!

Just noticed you asked about the ''free standing'' unit's which i think, is basically these so-called mobile units. Personally i wouldn't give them the time of day, they still need accesss to the exterior, and most are little more than a de-humidifier. Some will also need the condensed water collector emptying after every use.

Put it this way, you won't see any of these units being sold in any of the hotter countries where air conditioning units are commonly sold!!
