Correct me if I'm wrong but ..... To become an electrician in the UK

I have completed an apprenticeship and continue to be working for a local company going on 5 years total now.

I did 3 years in college, plus 2 years on site experience (NVQ level 3)
Also did AM2 (what's the point if not competent after this)
Then 2382 (17th edition)

Now.... if I want to go self employed I need 2391, but 2391 has finished, so I got to do 2394 & 2395 (twice the price) then pay NIC or ELECSA or NAPIT an annual fee to be able to sign off and do work legally....F**K SAKE.....might as well work for minimum wage WTF????

As far as I understand the Part P exam is for other building trades to be able to alter electrical circuits (WTF ?).

Don't mean to sound negative, Any assistance is a massive help thanks.

I just want a clear cut route on what qualifications and route is needed to become a self employed electrician in the UK (
I could have trained to be a f*****g surgeon by now).

Thanks, great forum.

1. Please don't use this language on the forum

2. You don't have to have the 2391 to go SE.

3. Call the schemes and get their welcome packs

4. Yes its a mess.

5. Whats the Part P exam?

nothing to stop you kicking in straight away. download part p doc. and see what work is notifiable. for non-notifiable work, just crack on. test and fill in the appropriate certificate. for notifiable jobs, however, you need to notify BC before work starts, and pay their exhorbitant fee, or join a part p competent person's scam and pay their annual fee .

1. Sorry I didn't realize I was offending anyone as I censored the swearing

2. Thought I had to gain 2394/2395, if I registered with a governing body.

5. Read about 2393 part p course, and other trades have done it.

Cheers Murdoch

So call the schemes, sounds like you are well on your way to having the right pieces of paper in place

I've been SE for 7years, and have never done Part P exam, so don't worry.
You will be expected at some time to get 239# quals, but are not restrictive to you getting scheme registered.
try STROMA for your accreditation, as their prices are much more acceptable

oh BTW, they are not GOVERNING BODIES, they are industry schemes, that are only relevant for part of the industry, go figure.

If anything you're Over Qualified, for being registered with any of the part P scheme providers!! They take anything, from 17 day whizz kids to 5 Week Wonder boys!! lol!!

I understand your frustration here but i would suggest your first step would be to 'as you are doing' find out all the options and preferably without the F..ing and blinding throughout your post as the mods take a dim view to even suggested swear-words.

You'll find this site a wealth of info if you do make the step to going alone so try not to get banned in the process ;)

3 years at (4 days on site and 1 day college), then another 2 years on site only.
Just wondered as my apprenticeship was 4 years with block release at college!!!!!thelast year at college ensuring you could go for your approved once qualified!!!!! Not sure how you got away with 3 years and 1 day a week at college!!!!! Maybe that's the reason you are struggling??? Doesn't sound normal too me!!!!are you an adult learner?????

It was a 4 year apprenticeship, but no college in the last year just nvq level 3 and am2.
4 days a week on site and 1 day college is standard for all apprentices at my college.
just curious how many days did you have to attend college ?

I think it depends what college you go to,the one I went to was block release and you were at college a few weeks then work for a few.
Another college that the other apprentices went to were for one day a week,so just depends I reckon.
