I've tried to get an answer to this but am struggling...

Customer is renovating house and he has removed the wall where the original meter and consumer unit were positioned. The whole lot including the main fuse is part lying / part suspended from the incoming supply (TT) and has been left hanging there!! Meter is still working and the supplier has even taken a meter reading with it like it!

Luckily it looks like it is not under any strain and has been like it for months, its well out of the way so there is no chance that it will be interfered with, anyway...I obviously took one look at it and said the supplier will have to reposition as its out of my remit so to speak, which he accepts and has booked the appointment with the DNO. Out of curiosity will he have to pay for a new meter? I assume they will fit a new smart meter, if he does have to pay any idea how much? And is there a cost if he can be upgraded to PME, as there are new houses being built nearby (house would have been semi rural when it was built) Thanks for your time.

They won’t be charged for a new meter, it’s a relocation.

Think of a three figure number, double it, add five, multiply by 3.142 subtract 47 and finally divide by 1.72. Just add a £ sign in front of it for the final cost.

And on the other hand ..... a customer of mine had a PME upgrade plus new meter prior to me installing a new CU ..... the cost from N-Power, nil.

They will only replace meter if its out of or near out of calibration as dated on front of meter ! as for PME if ok no cost should be charged ! as for relocation normally it it quite expencive 3 yrs ago to move a cutout & meter from inside to outside in a box was around £700 i think but that is what a customer told me that SSE quoted not sure what others will charge or how far it needs changing or if the supply cable will need extending or reducing but that will make a dif in pricing id think but he should have got the DNO in to move it before taking wall down for a number of safety reasons as the DNO dont like people touching their equipment as we know ! Im really suprised the meter readers didnt inform emergency service centre for immediate action though as their training should have informed them. If it was a bypassed meter they would have reported it so a safety issue as severe as this should have been sorted !

He was very very lucky ! when i was with SSE on metering i remember the blooming gas board putting their gas meter next to cutout in such a way you couldnt remove cutout fuse so i had a big idea to unscrew the board holding the cutout & meter to bend the supply cable slightly to get the 100amp out when all of a sudden the board inc cutout came off the supply cable and flew towards the gas meter ooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh sssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii lucky i managed to grab the supply cable with my marrigolds on a just in time and slid it back (very very carefully) back onto the cutout ! Man that was close !!!!!!!!!! tightend the cable on cutout changed meter reinstated 100a fuse, pulled my underpants back out and left ! Just goes to show what can happen ! and ive had a few loose cutouts ! if he would have had one of them theres no 30ma rcd protecting him !

Kung I agree, I was surprised that the meter reader just took a reading and went on his way. It will be interesting to see what they say when they come round. Thanks for your help.
