Hi all, only been an apprentice for 3 weeks and trying to learn myself as much as poss in my spare time.

Today we were at a job fitting 9 downlights in a kitchen, aswell as a conservatory light, which were both powered from a 2 gang switch in the kitchen.

If anybody has time I would really appreciate it if you could draw me a basic diagram on how this all wires up, including coming from the CU, to the downlights, switch, and conservatory light etc...

The guys at work did explain it to me but as im tring to learn so many different things, some things just dont stick at the minute.
I also seem to take things in better when at home and studying drawings and explanations etc.. rather than when put on the spot on site.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Don't wire to the downlight. Take your feed to a jb and flex out of the jb to the downlight. Go onto diynot.com and look at 1.2 way and intermediate lighting diagrams.

Say i have 2 double sockets in my living room, and I want to add a third, how would I go about this ?

Am i right in thinking, I would connect up some 2.5mm t&e to one of the existing sockets, which then goes direct to the new socket ? Surely its not that simple ?

Thanks again

It might be almost that easy, but equally it might not be. You have to do a bit of detective work and find out what is going on in that socket. Is it on a ring or is it a spur itself already, in which case is a fused connection unit needed somewhere?. How is the new length of cable going to be installed ? - will it have or need rcd protection? Does it have to be 2.5mm²?

And then you have to be able to test it and cert it to prove it is safe, and leave records for who comes next.
All in good time eh ;)
