Forgive me as I know pretty much nothing regarding electrical work but I'm sure someone on this forum can help me out.

I've own an ex-council garage which is at the top of my street.*It uses a low power bulb so i guessing it doesn't have a 240v feed.

Does anyone know anything about the likely powers source as I want to add a strip light and possibly power a hoover.

Took some photos of what I have:

Could I wire in a socket aswell?

Thanks

Phew ...........................please do mate.

What I was trying to say was there is a good chance that something that old will go bang .................but there is a slim chance it might not ................but you will only find that out by giving it a thorough test mate .............

Get a sparks in who can then send a report to your local council to get it all disconnected.

There's already signs of corrosion on the lightswitch/socket combination which if hit by something may break leaveing exposed parts.

It's very likely your local council is unaware of the potential dangerous state of these garages.

edit:didn't read OP properly and missed the 'ex-council' bit so likely no need to contact the council at all.....best option is to go by post #20's advice

As has been suggested by Malcolm and others get an electrician in to sort this little lot out for you. Not any electrician but one that is old enough to know how to deal with these braided cables and the metal conduit installation.

As this is probably a block of garages, it may be prudent to talk to the other owners of these sold off ex-council garages with the intention of giving the block a complete rewire. As if you are in the middle of this block, you are going to be stuck with those old braided cables supplying your garage. They will then be a source of failure at anytime in the future, especially if someone else (other owner) starts messing around with them....

Where in the country are you? I'm sure if you post your location on here (not your full address) someone on here who is local enough to you will be able to help you out.

I know this is an old thread however...

The lighting is currently a single 60w 24v bulb. Would it be possible to replace the bulb with a 24v LED strip? I realise from the comments above not to touch what's there but the light does work.

Would like a cool light as I've just painted the garage white and look to turn it into a workshop for my bikes etc.

If it is a 24V bulb then there must be a transformer somewhere. Either in each garage or at the feed to the first one. Can you find it? Daz
