CRB/dbs check

where do you guys get yours done?

ive found a place or two online.

is there any benerfit to getting more than the basic?

CRB checks were introduced mainly to ensure pedo's and the like were not working with children, this came about through numerous high ly reported scandals of child abuse within nursery groups by the very people who's care you put your child with, this led to a knee jerk reaction of a CRB check been required for work in any building with children in. The problem is that this was taken too far and ended up with it been implemented on tradesman doing work at the buildings been like schools, nursery's, swiming pools etc and started expanding to non related places like prisons etc...

Considering that most work in schools was done in half term breaks etc where children were not present or by a call into school where children were always around adults and you were there to do work they call you into do I find it only benefitting where you wish to fill a job post where you yourself would be in charge of children.

Years ago I worked in and out of a school for a decade or so then this stupid check was brought in and I couldn't go in until a CRB check had been done... the school had there hands ties and apologised as they knew me well and it totally made a mockery of the whole point of a CRB check... now if I was going to work in a school and be left in charge of a load of kids then yes agree with the check but when have you ever heard of sex assaults on kids in school by a tradesman working on site...????

It just more BS paperwork IMHO and I only deem it essential if your looking to fill a position of been in charge of youngsters and left alone with them, that I can understand.

I think they're a waste of time, they don't prove you're not a criminal. They prove you haven't been caught.

Even worse, they just prove you're not a criminal at that moment in time!

I'm doing a lot of work in schools at the moment and all they ever ask for is a basic CRB that is less than 3 years old! My last CRB was two years ago. For all they know, I could have nonced up hundreds of kids in two years!?!?!

In reply to the OP, can you not pay Disclosure Scotland for an enhanced CRB yourself?

Thats why we are electricians, as clever criminals dont get caught, just the the thick ones that do.

thats the reason i asked because you can do it yourself, my mother does them daily at work in council

You cannot do them "on" yourself.
Trust me, I got people to check...
If your mother is doing them @ the Council, she will be doing them on behalf of the Council, if she does one on herself, then alarm bells should ring, as there is a lot more to these checks than meets the eye.

I work in HMP's I am being hassled to do 4 jobs for them now, one in each of the local prisons.
I have no CRB checks done, my company cannot do them on me as it has to be done by an independent organisation, as I am a 1 person Ltd. Co. then that is out.

HMPS did the check on me before I worked there the first time, I believe, and they just keep letting me in now!

I had to provide enhanced information about myself a few weeks before the first planned job, a few years ago, and it's never been an issue since.

The, major reason I have a JIB card is that IF I need a CRB done, it can be done through them.

As you can't do it on yourself, I would leave it up to your employer to sort with HMPS.

I hope they have speeded things up a little. I worked direct on maintenance for the prison service starting in 2006 it tool nearly 5 months from me being offered the job to actually getting a start date due to security clearance.

Not sure, it was back in 2004/5 (IIRC), when I went in there first, don't remember back that far, I had a different company then, however, since that company closed and I started again they just kept, me, on.

honestly some people.

anyway i can ask her about the process and what i need but what i was really after was the names of some companies i could say give £50 and the paperwork and a couple weeks later id get a cjb card through the door

Well that is not what my quoted post of yours suggested, IMHO.

IF you need to do your own, I would suggest the JIB.

If it is down to your employer, forget about it, let them sort it, their problem, not yours.

...Not 100% accurate,when two teachers at my old school (long since gone) were at it,both prosecuted. A fella i shoot with ,had a certain weather man as a teacher,and he has had a letter...I fully accept your point,regarding these "impositions",which is what they are on innocent folk,but every time there is a failure,and we have seen some bad ones,a response is demanded,and applied.
I did a post a while back,about being denied access to Faslane submarine base,years ago,due to the vetting process revealing both my parents were journalists.....and i could recite the Thetis story,by heart from age 10! :conehead:
Since my lads got involved with the Scouts,i have been "inducted" in the assistance of,and have had to go through several checks. This bothers me not. The only thing those checks failed to reveal,was my propensity to have my chainsaw in the tent,at camp. THIS,proved to be,apparently,more of a concern,than if i had brought Stuart Hall along...:icon12:

Interesting but a different scenario all the same, but I'll stand by my claim as to why it was introduced as a public outcry as to how people with pedo records can find jobs working with children, of course you can't stop anyone with no record or police interest but it was the issue that snowballed all this CRB checking that just went silly... now you need a CRB check to watch Cbeebies..
