Hi Guys, does anybody know if the electricians cscs card is different than a standard cscs card that you can get free training for when you are unemployed ?

thanks in advance

I am unemployed at the moment mate.I had to pay ÂŁ35 for the test.No training given. It's just a 40 question multiple choice paper.Hope this helps mate.If you were working for a JIB company, they usually pick up the tab.

Yes I believe so, my friend did the CSCS card and when he applied to renew his JIB card was told it was of no use, as it did not cover electrical safety insufficient detail.

The electrical CSCS exam is not hard as when you book you should be sent a booklet with all the questions in, if not visit JIB web site ECS Question Databank Download: ECS031 and ECS058

Then the more revision you do the easier the exam will be. Best of luck.

you dont need to even have a ecs card you just apply for a cscs card then when they have space they would tell you and you go and do the exam for free and they make you do some fire safety test ting and first aider and get the cscs card with the green strip on it called operatives or something and thats it just renew it every 3 years, i believe the ecs is a waste of tym

All,

I have my Part P, 2382 and also 2377 and i do not work currently as an electrician and never have.

I have searched various websites and a lot seem to ask for a ECS/CSCS card.

All i want to do is book an exam get a booklet to revise from and then sit the exam, to keep costs down.

Ideally i would like to work as an electrician on a building site but if push came to shove then i would start out as a labourer.

What are my options with regards to CSCS and ECS?

I don't believe that there is any benefit in an electrician applying for a CSCS card. The Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) is the only relevant card to the industry, and that is what people should go for. It is affiliated to the CSCS.

ECS is administered by the JIB.

risteard is right here. the test for ecs has an extra section on electrotechnical safety is the difference. call jib and they'll tell you your nearest test centre, book the test get the book do a little study practice (its easy compared to what you've already gained) sorted

Here comes my cynical point of view...

I've done shed loads of H&S on 2330 & have first exam to prove I know my way round the H&S awareness, yet is not recognised by ECA & so like the other 50 odd people in the room had to shell out ÂŁ35 + travel costs to attend a 40 question multiple choice, which 90% of the questions were idiotic common sense & were covered by my 2330 notes...

Money for old rope...

yea the standard cscs card is just a labours card alot of sites wont let u on with it unless your picking up rubbish.

There are 9 different types of cards

Red Trainee
Green Construction operative
Blue Experienced worked or craftsman
Gold Advanced Craftsman / Supervisor
Platinum Management
Black Senior Management
Yellow Professionally Qualified Person
Yellow Visitor
White Construction related Occupation

each type of card has a different level of knowledge, so a red card holder will not have the same sort of questions as a black card holder. Also an approved plumber/gas fitter will have different questions than an electrician.

If you do go for the ECS card expect a 3mth wait ! JIB are 5-6wks behind and it takes 5-6wks to process the application then upto 6wks for the ECS card to arrive on your doorstep so get this sorted asap and remember dont leave anything out or your be waiting only to get the application returned.
