Discuss Customer has his own pre 17th cu he wants to use in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

So if I am adding all the lighting to the RCD side and just leaving the cooker and the shed on the non rcd side, I think I can implement this board and be compliant.

Any thoughts to the contry Gentleman

Hi

Trouble is by having this arrangement it goes against the reg "circuits shall be arranged in order to minimise disruption in the event of a fault" as you have all the lighting and power protected by one RCD. Hence the inroduction of the dual RCD consumer unit.

OK just 1 rcbo required for upstair lights, that way if the main rcd goes while someone is in the shower. They won't be plunged into darkness.

All agreed?

is it possible to put a second rcd incommer in to this board wylex 5504

Why not replace the main switch with a 100amp 30mA rcd just make it the main switch, you can get them for around ÂŁ50, Even if some circuits are not necessarily required to have an RCD it's always worth having a bit of extra protection, and the RCD would indicate when the elements are on there way out in the cooker etc.

Hi Pennywise/Martin

A single RCD controlling the consumer unit would not comply with the 17th edition regulations you will need to assess and divide the circuits up to allow minimal disruption. Martin give the guy a price for a new board and the price for using his board, the latter is more expensive, always best to RCD all normal circuits as the client could flush part of the lighting circuit or replace the cooker switch with a combined isolator and socket outlet.

Regards

I know you can't have one RCD doing the whole CU, What I meant was to keep the second RCD and make the main switch a time delay 100amp RCD ( sorry didn't mention the time delay bit ).

Pennywise. Still, if you did this, in the event of a fault on either of your "unprotected" circuits such as the cooker it will trip the time delayed rcd and still knock off all of the power, therefore not complying with the regs.

Apologies to Martin and the others, I admit I was wrong. Think i made a little bit of a knee jerk reaction with the first post. Having come to my senses with others help I would say just change the CU to a 17th one, explain to the customer that it will be cheaper in the long run, you could even put in a larger board with more spare ways and so future proofing for later expansion.

I wouldn't put the upstairs lights and sockets on the same RCD, as if the upstairs sockets trip the lights go out too! And which floor is the shower on? I'd put the Upstairs lights on an RCBO on the unprotected side.
