Having problems receiving money from a client. They are either ignorant, arrogant or both. I put my invoice in a week last Friday.

We are small business and rely on fast payments to cover wages costs and material costs. However I have still not received any form of payment. This was a private installation not a business to business.

Not sure what the next move is. I know they get 30days to pay up but I feel as though they are the holding money back for no reason. It's ÂŁ4000, so hardly something we can let go.

Adding bits, discounts, jobs for cash, mark ups etc.

I'm a simple soul, I have terms and conditions and provide a written quote. They contain all the information such as work to be done, amount it will cost, what is/isn't included, payment times and so on. I don't accept cash payments, only cheques and BACS.

It's not rocket science, I do what I say I will, the customer pays me what's required when it's required and we all move on with our lives.

A well worded contract formed from terms and conditions with a quotation removes all margin for error or doubt on either side. Payment always taken in a traceable manner and HMRC can look through my books anytime they want.

Life's complicated enough without adding to it.

Heard a good one similar to that once the bloke turned round and said that it was ÂŁ240 but let's call it ÂŁ200 for cash, the woman replied no we won't it will be ÂŁ240 and we will be round to your office tomorrow to go over your accounts, turned out she worked for HMRC.
I once quoted for a job and the guy wanted to know the cost of materials, anyway he looked at it then asked if I thought the wholesaler would lose the vat content if he paid in pound notes, turned out he was a retired vatman, how about that for hard faced lol

HMRC and the government will always make out that millions a year are lost because of 'cash' jobs but it is just a load of BS...

A customer wants to avoid VAT so pays you ÂŁ100 instead of ÂŁ120 - with that extra ÂŁ20 he takes his mrs down the pub/puts petrol in his car etc etc...

Government still get the tax, just one or two stages later!

Unless of course the money is paid into an offshore bank account lol.

Think I've got my first non payers! Bloke I've done a fair few bits of work referred me to his mate downstairs, always paid me as soon as invoice has been sent, both had the invoices sent 10 days ago and nothing other than conformation of receiving the invoices.

Could both do with the money now and without this grief at the moment but this is life and I'll have to wait a little while I suppose!

Eye contact is a funny thing. Quite a lot of people find it hostile, people with Asperger's or other autistic spectrum disorders for example.

They certainly get the skitters when I make eye contact - the Geordie Glare is a sight to behold (so I'm told) but the Geordie Growl that often accompanies it is something else.

Tidyboiler's eyes are scary too, but come to think of it so's the rest of her AND SHE STILL HASN'T TURNED UP WITH ME SHOPPING!!

Yet another myth pretty much, yes there is a small "black economy" where people work for cash which doesn't get declared and no tax is paid on it but what the government don't publicise is the ÂŁ BILLIONS we are owed by millionaires and big companies. It's never mentioned that Vince Cable "forgot about" over ÂŁ100,000 of income on his tax return a couple of years ago, he got a stern telling off.
What would have happened to one of us?
These millionaires and big companies are not pursued because the government are in their pockets and they're scared of them.
