O

Octopus

Saw this today. Apologies for the carp photo.

Its the use of Wago's connecting the under cupboard lights!

Acceptable or not?

Personally I wouldn't do it!

No it's looking lovely :)

The light is actually continious. I've seen them before with the light looking a bit 'knobly' if you know what i mean.

Nothing worse than a knobbly light...unless it's on the end of me doctors endoscope:goofy:

I'm getting out the Ouija board,so i can tell me grandad about all these big, rough rsed working lads, all discussing illumination of pelmets...He might well hang up...:smartass:

Suprised no ones mentioned the succulents..... Anyway I'm off to bed ive got man flu.

526.5

526.5, 559.5.1

I don't disagree with the opinion that the original photo is not good and its not the way I would do it, but there isn't anything as far as I can see that it conflicts with in the regs, as it is ELV.

Not sure your references are applicable:
526.5 - I appreciate that the voltage range of a live conductor is not defined, but when its in the same sentance as a PEN conductor its usually associated with LV rather than ELV

559.5.1 - specifically relates to the thermal effects of luminaires not connections. LED strip doesn't radiate heat like other luminaires.

If you take the regulations as they are stated and do not apply any assumptions or modifications, then they are fairly clear.
526.5 (precis) Every joint in a live conductor or a PEN conductor shall be made in an accessory, an equipment enclosure or an enclosure and part of a non combustible building material.
559.5.1 (not 559.4.1) (precis) one of the following shall be used for termination of the wiring: a light, lamp holder or ceiling rose, an LSC or dcl, A BS1363 socket or connection unit, a plug in distribution unit, an installation coupler or terminals in a junction box.

If you assume all ELV can ignore some of the regulations then yes there are easier ways to do things, but that is a decision you have made and not what is written.

I would tend to agree that in general the risk of electric shock is pretty much absent at 12V dc, but other things can come into play than electric shock.

,

Sorry Yellow book in van, was looking at Green book.

I still go back to 414.4.5, where it says basic protection is not required for ELV. Example of that are ELV lights that straddle 2 catenary wire supply lines, where does that come under 559.5.1?

Lets agree to disagree!

It just looks crap, I think thats the point. Regs or not its not good workmanship and I bet his customer put that in themselves. I'd use a wago lighting box (Wagobox Light Junction Box | Cable Connectors | Screwfix.com) and some wago lighting connectors (2-Way Lighting Connector 224 Series Pack of 100 | Cable Connectors | Screwfix.com) that way they can be push released whenever you need to replace your failed led strip. The box is MF when used as directed, neat tidy and would fit behind the pelmet or up on top of the unit to suit.
