Has anyone used SY cable to send data down? Thinking about potentially running an intercom from gate at top of driveway down to house via SY. Thoughts?

There's a page in the on site guide warning about using SY,YY and CY for fixed wiring as it's not made to a British recognised standard and warns about installing it in place if more recognisable BASEC cables.
That said if your not using it for 300/400 volt applications, it may not apply.

Regarding the "not suitable for outdoor use" maybe the thousands of offshore installations with SY widely used outside in the harshest possible conditions got 'the using it outside bit' wrong.....? Hmmmmmm

Cheers for the few sensible replies anyway

The SY cable we use in the UK is not suitable for outdoor use unless it is protected, it has a low UV tolerance which will quickly see the clear plastic sheath lose its structural integrity where by it will easily crack and let moisture in leading to the corrosion of the braid screening, if used outdoors the manufacturers do state that it must be suitably protected, the cables you talk of used offshore are probably not SY and will cost several times that of the SY we buy off the shelf in the wholesalers.
The S - stands for steel wire braid
The Y - stands for PVC
As you can see this can cover a wide range of similar cables but they made be designed to very different standards depending on their purpose but generally SY is a automation and /or control cable which has a clear PVC sheath to allow for visual inspection and is often used in the rail industries where cables are inspected regular for the safety of the rail network and damage to the cable can be quickly identified.

To note some SY is made with a black LSZH spec but again this has low UV tolerance.

I can show you plenty of similar cables to SY but they are strictly not SY as the sheath wont be PVC and are usually manufactured for specific industry needs as oppose to general use, I use these cables alot and I believe you may be referring to something similar on the offshore comment IGUS, LAPP are to name a few companies who make specialised cables that would be suitable for such purposes but at a great cost for what OP requires that could be done with a much cheaper solution.
