Guys had a few beers and a heavy debate just want a few answers that I can send to my 'mate'. He was talking about his son a roofer that is on ÂŁ150 a day HE is a curtain fitter on ÂŁ180 a day and when asked how much I charge I said ÂŁ200 a day and he said that's way to much! Am I a c@#t or should we be earning more than a curtain fitter!!!

My company charges us out at different rates depending on the client. The average is around ÂŁ35 an hour. Over 8 hours that's ÂŁ280. Obviously part of all of that is what is called overhead recovery. That basically means it costs them about ÂŁ25 an hour to pay for overheads such as my hourly rate then vans, diesel, office staff, directors range rovers that kinda stuff. So no for a full shift ÂŁ200 is pretty decent as in your ÂŁ25 an hour you will also have overhead recovery but on a different scale to a big company.

How can a curtain fitter say that he is getting ÂŁ180 a day then say a sparky is on too much when its ÂŁ20 more than him! We went to college for years, we work with something very dagerous what the f does he do really! People just dont appreciate what we actually do and want to pay us peanuts for doing it.

i have a feeling someone got a bite here.

We charge ÂŁ350 per day for a fully qualified 2391 electrician.

Apprentices are ÂŁ100 per day.

that is mostly commercial work, domestic is done on price and not day rate.

What do you mean by fully qualified 2391 electrician?

Personally I'll charge as much as I can.
If you are charging ÂŁ200 per day and you are flat out busy then you should put your rates up, but if you are not getting enough work then you are too expensive.

And when the hell did 'curtain fitter' become a trade??

full apprenticeship, nvq level 3, am2, test and inspection 2391. That's not unreasonable, all the guys I train get those qualifications and go on to become excellent tradesmen. They get a JIB card and can go on to have a successful career as an electrician.

thats why we charge what we charge and I have never had an unhappy customer or been out of work, in 15 years.

And before you ask, a full apprenticeship is at least 3 years experience, and 1 year working as an electrician, designing, fault finding and testing alone with no advice before you are considered qualified.

I think thats perfectly reasonable, especially if you talking about employees, who have holidays, sickness, pensions, etc, etc.

We should be working together to bring our industries rates up, not questioning each other's pricing. It's a long time to become an electrician, and people deserve to be paid for their efforts.

I worked for sse from the Chichester depot for 5 years, ÂŁ120 a day. They charge a lot more for us to work for them.

How much are the actual electricians paid themselves? i usually book employed labour out with 80-100% mark up
