Hello All

Ive been thinking of doing the electrical design course.

Ive found where to do this but thought i would just ask around to see if anyone has done this course and what they thought of it and what i should expect.

I done the 2391 inspection and testing over a year ago now what i found not to bad and passes with flying colours.

Thanks

James

For a installation spark, some sort of electrical design course is a must.

It gives them an in-depth, technical understanding of their Trade,
and more confidence in the design of new "non-standard circuits".

If you'v got a chance and like the subject then do it.

Ive done the 2391-20, well ive passed the thepry in december, but have dragged my hels with the project. Its now called the 2396, and is now a level 4 course, rather than than a level 3. As for the course content, ive heard that it hasnt changed.

I found the theory part easy, and passed with a distinction. I was also the only installation spark on the course, and all the other blokes, had HNC as a minimum qualification.

The reason i did well was that i revised and pretty much retaught myself the course content before i enrolled. reading advice dished out to blokes on here by the likes of JUD, Lenny, Malc to name a few, gave me the confidence to enroll in the first place, as i found i understood what they were talking about.

buy the electricians design guide, along with OSG, and BS7671. To be honest, i found the OSG the most useful on the theory exam, as it was so easy to find the info regarding derating ect.

The project takes a lot of time to complete. I decided early on, that im crap at drawing, so i learnt to use Autocad, and copied the drawings onto the computer, so i could annotate them correctly. This has also given me useful skills that i may use in the future.
this has added lots and lots of hours to my workload, but for me it was useful.
Im nearly there now, and cant wait to finish it.

Its a shame that you dont often see jobs advertised for electricians with this qualification. They tend to get engineers with a min of HNC to design circuits.

Its not really needed as a spark on the tools - most domestic work uses standard OSG circuit arrangements and commercial contracts already have drawings made up by electrical consultants.

That said its nice to have an understanding of how things come together , just dont expect any work / job offers to come from it.
