Detached garage wiring - a little guidance please.

(Please note - I'm in my 2nd year of the 2357 course. I will not be attempting any work on my own.)

I'll soon be moving to a new house with an external double garage that has power to it already for a couple of sockets and lights. I will need to rewire as I'm planning to use the space to house several arcade video games, along with a small workshop.

The games draw approximately 4-4.5A each and I'll need to allow for 18 of them. I'll only be using basic power tools in the workshop, no welders or the like. Only other load would be basic fluorescent lighting.

Obviously the total demand would be quite high when all the games are powered up (this will be the case a lot of the time), so I was thinking about taking the meter tails, into an isolator switch, then into a henley block which would feed the house CU and the external CU in the garage. I understand the tails from the henley block should not be more than 3 metres, so was wondering the best way of accomplishing this?

I haven't been able to assess how the garage is connected to the CU yet, although I'm assuming it's buried somewhere as there's nothing overhead!

The house is using a TN-S system.

I'm 44 and still can't afford a double garage. Hope you didn't believe all the hype that being an electrician pays well....

Nope, I believed all the hype about being a musician instead. Now I have chronic tinnitus and the yearning to spend the next 20 years enjoying free tea and biscuits while updating old people's consumer units

so why hasn`t anyone even bothered to ask what the earthing arrangements are here?...
or whether theres any extranious in that garage?

I've been a classical guitarist for 22 years, and have been teaching to diploma level for the last 9 years, in the evenings. I have a lot of hand joint pain along with neck issues due to playing. The electrical work gives me bad knees to go with all the other discomfort

Re above job......I've heard recently that some sparky's now stake down the detached garage electrics so as no potential voltage differences between house and garage. IE the land (earth) between the two. Is this true, a mew reg thing?

Do the wiring in singles in conduits to dedicated FSU's and you don't need to worry about tripping a non-existent RCD anyway!

well in that case use an armoured out to the shed...it wont need an RCD top end as is TN earthing..
RCD garage end for additional protection for finals...

Must be single yep.. Either that or bluddy lucky.. If i suggested changing the garage into a games room she would kill me..

Id have to build one mind you.. Got a shed it leaks and stinks and full of manky old cable that i aint been chewed to scrap yet.. not quite the same but maybe one day..
