Wanting to swap single on/off switch to a dimmer switch. On getting old plate off (see picture) there were more cables than I was expecting and I decided to stop and ask advice. Second picture is of dimmer purchased, Could anyone please tell what cables go where? Many thanks.

The two browns in COM on the old switch into C of the new switch, the brown from L1 into 1. The two blues need fitting together into a separate connector and put into the back box, DO NOT CONNECT THE BLUES TO THE NEW SWITCH.

Hi I have a very similar situation, I have 2 browns in Com, 3 blues in loop(N) and a brown in L1.. Should I connect the 3 blues to a terminal box?

yes. the blues into a choc block or a 3 port wago, not connect to switch. and if new switch is metal faceplate, earth cable must go in the faceplate earth terminal. earth flylead to back box optional

Thanks, will isolating these cables from the switch prevent the RCD or fuse box for the lights working? Please excuse my lack of understanding.

no . the N terminal on the old switch is just a parking terminal to save using a separate connector for convenience and neatness. most switches do not have the N terminal.
