Hello , im new to the Electricians Forum ,havent used it before , need some advice if possible,
I came into the industry quite late ( 6 years electrical installation experience)  and have paid for all my training so far as i was past the age of apprenticeship schemes and other stuff (currently qualified to CG 2330 L2+3) was set to do my NVQ L3 and AM2 but have been laid off ....... as most of you probably know , i have to be employed in the industry to even be accepted on the NVQ course but im now out of work , add to that the fact that every job i go for want fully qual only and i cant get agency work without an ECS card  (sat the exam waiting for results) and then to apply for the Trainee Electrician ECS card i have to get sponsorship from "my employer" and have evidence that im looking into or have signed up for the NVQ L3 and AM2 ......feel like my head is going to explode , im going round in circles ......ive paid out over ÂŁ2000 so far and still have my NVQL3, AM2 , 17th Ed ,and 2391 to go , im running out of ideas , im hoping to get on with a larger firm and see if i can get help with the rest of my training , if that dosent happen then ill have to re-think my career choice as the route to becoming an electrician with my current qualifications ,im told, is being phased out .........need answers ....

If you go part p.....then try to get work where theres other sparks working or someone who could sign to say you did this work for evidence..........

JP303, I feel for you mate. I have no answer for you but I am sure the guys will give you some valuable guidance.
Keep your chin up and stay positive, I wish you all the best and hope you get some good news soon.

there is another way. if you want to work for yourself, form a limited company with you as director and , say, your mrs as co. sec. then your limited co. employ you.

Sorry to hear about your predicament JP, but don't give up. You have achieved the underpinning knowledge of the technical Cert, and well done you. Enroll for your 17th edition and try to get an agency job (not ideal I know). Did you get on with your previous employer> Can someone there sign your form? Failing that, to get on site you only need a cscs card, that doesn't need an employer's sponsorship. (without NVQ3 you would only get trainee grade anyway so not much lost there).

You don't have to be working to do the AM2 either. When they ask you for the employer checklist you just tell them you're paying for it yourself. With the AM2 and 17th done, (you can be working in any job to support yourself whilst doing this) you will be more employable when the opportunities come around. And they will.

I have paid for all my training, and know how you feel. The qualifications are under review, but there is time yet. If you were to enroll on the NVQ3 with one of the online schemes, you wouldn't even have to do the AM2 (worth thinking about) and you would have 2 years to complete it, (bare in mind, one good 6 month contract would see you complete all sections).

Pm me at any time if you want more info.

cheers.

......ive paid out over ÂŁ2000 so far and still have my NVQL3, AM2 , 17th Ed ,and 2391 to go , im running out of ideas , im hoping to get on with a larger firm and see if i can get help with the rest of my training , if that dosent happen then ill have to re-think my career choice as the route to becoming an electrician with my current qualifications ,im told, is being phased out .........need answers ....
If you have some experience working in electricals and a bit of qualification. you could try doing one of these courses - NICEIC | Contractor | Schemes | Domestic Installer - Part P training courses for Domestic Electrical Installation

By the way...welcome to the forum mate...

You do not have to be employed to do the nvq. Granted it is designed for employed people but it can be done. I think there is only a year left however for you to apply as it is being changed and the entry requirements altered.
I am doing year 3 of the 2330 and we had the nvq guy round a month or so ago explaining everything. Obviously it is far more difficult to do the nvq as gaining the experience required for the different units will be difficult and finding people to sign off your assignments (or whatever they are called) will also be problematic, but not impossible. My group is adults and only a couple of people have just started this, I will be looking later on this acedemic year.
Our (schools) nvq assessor just said that it is trickier to do but he has had quite a few students achieve this.
It must be said though that my college's staff are incredibly helpful and seem to take a real personal pride in guiding their students

so your on level 3 2330 and the NVQ guy has only just bothered to turn up?....which college is this?.....I have just started year 2 level 2 2330 and the NVQ guys (theres 2 of em) have already explained everything to us in a classroom and given us folders and info packs...the lot. Now then,....this new NVQ is doable for sure but it aint as flexible as the 2356.....and i think thats why theres a bit of a mad dash to get on the old framework now.......

pay for it all myself aswell, but if its what you want and enjoy doing, you'l find away todo it..... im on 3rd year level 3 and he said its not impossible todo nvq if you not working , but surely by the time it comes round you might have done some work, just take photos and loads of the other stuff you need... i always take photos of my jobs cause im a big head

Our course has been split into two groups, adults and apprentices. A lot of the apprentices are already doing their nvq. I think the adults were only visited this year as none of us were active in the industry, primarily through lack of qualifications. Also we have to pay ÂŁ1k up front as not subsidised!
Barnstaple (rebranded at a cost of god knows what to Petroc, now they can't even afford the cost of photocopying!), N Devon.
Was saying that the current one is do-able even if unemployed. They may even subsidise it for people just laid off but one of the primary entry conditions on to all these courses is going to be that you have to already be in the industry which excludes re-trainers. That is the rush we were told and jp303 falls into the having to rush category. Do-able but daunting if you are outside the industry or unemployed.

Thing is...i got the 17th and the 2392 before i even started at college (which has helped a lot)....so i had a bit of understanding about sparkying before starting at college but the idea of college is to get the quals whilst the NVQ is all about the practical experience by example....sounds to me like they have "prioretised" the apprenticeship lads at the expence of you guys which dont seem right to me......after all a lot of the younger ones (on apprenticeships i might add) do nowt but arse about anyway....

the first two years of my 4 year course all i done was wire extra lights and like for like fittings..... its a start and gets you out and about.... doing a bit , only last week i wired my first cu....... get hooked on electrics like myself and join few social clubs sports and before you know it you will be out and about doing electrical work, and building confidence to try more challenging jobs..... ... you have to push people ideas leave loads of lighting mags at peoples houses, do whatever it takes without robbery or murder

It’s sad that you had to say no more money to them for them to pull their fingers out.
