hi doing my nvq at the moment
1st fix consumer unit installed a garage one rcd 2x mcb this was passed
2nd fix consumer unit garage one rcd 2x mcb this was passed
1st fix distribution board
2nd fix distribution-boards

now is a distribution board a domestic consumer unit with main switch as it distributes the power round the circuits

Consumer units are a type of distribution board, but not all distribution boards are consumer units?

as il never at work be doing a commercial board 3 phase

Yes consumer units are a form of Distribution board as you say, and perhaps your first go to place in search of answers - good habit to form - should be BS 7671. In this case the definitions section in BS 7671 - a reference source that the more you use the better you become with it plus useful as it sets out answers using correct terminology.

There you will see the phrase 'type-testing of the assembly' and it is within the BS en 61439 family of standards where further detail helps define
