Hi All

I am planning on rewiring my house and I am going to undertake a Domestic Electricians course but the one thing that I need help on is where to learn to extra skills required like plastering, making good and general DIY skills so that I don't make a total hash of the finish.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to any DIY training courses please?

many thanks and have a good day!

to be honest mate, if your not good at DIY, then dont bother going on the domestic course. Try and get some experience with a decent spark, and learn how to use the tools with him. The last thing you want is to injure yourself or others and make a mess of the job, whuilst your trying to learn.

I am with johnboy on this. I dont want to dampen your enthusiasm, but the wiring up is probably the easier part of a rewire if you have none or very limited DIY ability. If you are down on DIY skills, then i assume you are down on tools and equipment.

Rewires are fraught with problems, and some of them test even the best in the game.

If you pull a floorboard up, and cut it short of the joist by accident, would you know what to do to make the floorboard secure when you refit it. What would you need to have in your toolbox in case you cut into a water pipe late in the day, and the homeowner wants some water on overnight, the plumbers merchant is shut.
The list goes on and on. if you cant answer either straight off the cuff, then you could end up in the brown stuff. And these are everyday run of the mill problems.

Cheers...........Howard

Totally agree with John and Howard. If your only experience of electrical work is a short course domestic, don't try to rewire a house regardless if its your own.

Would you allow me to change the brake pads on your car if I told you I only did a few weeks car mechanical course? It's only you and your families safety we are talking about????

Ive done a Electrical Trainee domestic installers course and i wouldn't wire my house!! eeeek!!! :army: tin hat on!!

On a serious note, dont think you'll be competent just because of what they claim on the course,i learnt that the hard way!
Im taking my time with the course (nearly 2 years now) to try and learn as much as i can whilst doing minor jobs for friends and family to get used to the testing side and ease my way in.
I wouldn't dream of attempting a rewire simply because id easly find myself way over my head in the event of a problem arising.
Im not trying to put you off but more to make you aware that in no way will you be competent enough in 4/5/6 weeks, you'll have to be in it for the long haul.

Hi there if you want get started in the electrician field i have a full OLCI electricians course for sale half the OLCI asking price. I came to have it because I took a course with Access 2 Trade careers which then went into liquidation but the finance supplier then gave me a full course with OLCI that I have never started due to my situation at work becoming secure I recently asked them if the course could be transfered to another student and they agreed so if you or anybody you know want to train as a full electrician for half the usual asking price then contact me on
[email protected]
.
The course is from no knowledge to fully qualified electrician including part p and testing all books and equipment supplied.
