I'm pretty sure I know the answer to the problem

May I ask this related question ?

Should we assume if the MCB trips on a circuit protected by an RCD it's a problem with the CPC
Based on RCD detecting imbalances between L + N
Or am I talking a load of BS ?

Not necessarily a problem with the cpc itself, but think along the lines of what you said about an imbalance between L&N what would cause an imbalance (if it is an RCD tripping) if it's a CB tripping what would cause that? Sorry if I'm going over old ground.

Paul I might be stupid (more than likely, actually!) But you've lost me there!

Increased leakage to earth current? test the circuit compared to the past test results with the plastic sockets to see any difference in reading that could possibly cause the pfc to reach the circuit breakers trip rating? Or maybe a backbox is touching an extraneous conductive part?

Possible no where near but the "type" of the CB needs changing?

Mcb tripping under 'no apparent load' it's a SC fault. If it's a L-E fault even with an RCD if there's negligible impedance it's a coin ---- at which will trip first.

IR testing is the way to find this fault.
